Overview
Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer at our Toledo, OH HBI location. The Mechanical Engineer provides maintenance engineering support to maximize plant equipment availability. The role supports operations through analysis of equipment health and recommendations to increase time between overhauls. It serves as a technical resource for planning, scheduling, and execution of mechanical maintenance and supports plant reliability through troubleshooting of mechanical systems to reduce lost opportunities.
Responsibilities- Provide engineering design and specifications for mechanical equipment and systems including rotating equipment, piping systems, vessels, conveyors and other mechanical equipment
- Utilize reliability tools in support of continuous improvement, including leading or supporting key activities of the reliability program
- Apply education to be familiar with and apply corrosion and metallurgy requirements imposed by codes, specifications and guidelines (e.g., NACE, API, ASME, ANSI)
- Flag and advise the production team on risks related to equipment reliability, process equipment availability, and mechanical integrity
- Maintain a unit availability perspective and an equipment reliability strategy; document problematic equipment and provide input to operational and maintenance activities
- Establish key processing best practices to improve profitability, including operating conditions, hardware change recommendations, monitoring process conditions, and unit performance reporting/benchmarking
- Evaluate existing system and component capabilities by analyzing data using engineering software
- Review data from preventative maintenance activities and operations, monitor effectiveness and frequency, and make changes as necessary
- Lead on predictive technologies such as NDE/NDT, oil analysis, vibration analysis, thermography, ultrasonics and motor circuit analysis
- Analyze operational and maintenance equipment history to drive improvements in critical maintenance metrics and KPIs
- Perform root cause analysis in support of operational events and equipment failure investigations to ensure root causes and corrective actions are identified and followed up
- Provide mechanical technical guidance and assistance with troubleshooting to Shift Supervisors and mechanical craft personnel daily
- Conduct studies and prepare reports on project cost projections and potential cost-saving projects
- Prepare capital expenditure documentation and justification
- Act as a liaison with third-party service providers for oil, vibration, and thermography
- Maintain equipment register; manage changes to standard jobs and maintenance scheduling tasks
- Write work orders and contribute to execution of work where required
- Direct and coordinate the work performed by operating employees for new equipment installations or testing to ensure conformity to engineering design and specifications
- Other duties as assigned
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- 3+ years of plant-level maintenance mechanical engineering experience with mechanical systems in the petrochemical, metals, or mineral processing industry
- Knowledge of machinery design, statistics and project management
- High proficiency with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and ability to analyze data for reliability improvements
- Experience in predictive technologies such as NDE/NDT, oil analysis, vibration analysis, thermography, ultrasonics, and motor circuit analysis
- Effective written and oral communication skills
- Ability to read and influence personnel in cross-functional groups
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities
- Demonstrated equipment troubleshooting skills
- Experience with capital justification, budget development, expenditures and controls
- Proficient computer skills
- Physical ability to be sedentary for long periods, lift up to 25 lbs occasionally, and work on feet for extended periods; mobility required including stairs
- Willingness to work in a plant environment with noise, dust, dirt, vibrations, and varying climates; ability to work at heights
