Position: Controls Engineer – Automotive – Relocation Available

Description

The Assembly Engineer (Automation Program Manager) serves as an automation/assembly systems expert, overseeing design, construction & implementation of welding & assembly equipment at the plants, as well as at our suppliers’ locations. This role is tasked with directing activities concerned with the implementation of assembly tooling, fulfilling the production requirements for new & existing programs/product launches.

Responsibilities
  • Plans/develops methods & procedures for implementing assembly tooling & welding equipment within specified budgets.
  • Directs program activities regarding assembly equipment, while coordinating with other program project managers.
  • Oversees assembly equipment activities & design/construction/implementation assembly & welding tooling personnel.
  • Reviews assembly tooling vendors’ proposed designs, & processes equipment through all phases of development.
  • Works with other PMs to ensure equipment satisfies internal/external customer requirements.
  • Reviews vendor progress to assure adherence to established schedules/timelines.
  • Modifies the methodology or redirects activities as necessary to attain objectives within time frame/cost limits.
  • Directs external plant personnel & suppliers in development/implementation of assembly or welding equipment.

    Escalates concerns/issues when necessary to the success of the project or objectives.
  • Participates in, attends and/or leads customer meetings to review timeline, goals, objectives & other launch/program activities.

Qualifications
  • Must have either a Degree in Engineering, Welding Technology, Mechanical, Industrial, OR Equivalent Experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in the manufacturing environment (especially automation, welding & assembly).
  • Familiarity with robotic programming & PLC programming (Siemens, Allen‑Bradley, Omron, Schneider Electric, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of material handling & welding (including spot / MIG / drawn arc stud / projection).
  • Knowledge of process flow, control plans, PFMEA, statistical process, & machine error proofing.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, 3D‑CAD product design viewing, & GD&T.
  • Expertise in processing/quoting new assembly equipment in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, & principles involved in producing technical plans, blueprints, drawings & models.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Project, Power Point), creating spreadsheets, presentations & other functions (i.e., reporting & analysis).
  • Proven time management & project management skills.
  • Strong verbal/written communication & organizational skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting & problem resolution skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to work independently, multi‑task & prioritize.
  • Flexibility of schedule & willingness to work outside of standard core hours when needed.
  • Must be willing to relocate to either Veedersburg IN or Ionia MI for opportunity (relocation package provided).
  • Must be able to travel to Canada / Mexico / FNG plants during launch phases.
