Summary

The Director of Finance is an executive finance leader responsible for providing strategic financial leadership, business model innovation, and forward‑looking partnership across the Museum. Reporting to the Director & CEO, this position oversees all accounting and finance operations while serving as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and the Board in support of organizational strategy, financial sustainability, and responsible growth.

This role is intentionally designed as a succession opportunity. Working closely alongside the outgoing Chief Financial & Operating Officer through a structured transition, the successful candidate will be positioned to assume executive financial leadership following the planned retirement of the current CFOO at the end of 2027. The ideal candidate will be both rigorous with financial accounting and growth‑oriented in approaching the Museum’s business and operating model.

The Director of Finance directly leads the Museum's Finance Department and partners closely with the Chief Development Officer and the Director & CEO, as well as other senior leaders, to strengthen financial planning, maximize philanthropic impact, evaluate emerging revenue opportunities, and support innovative models that advance the Museum's mission. The Director of Finance works closely with the leadership team, departmental leaders, and the Board of Directors to shape the financial and operational expectations for the museum and to oversee execution against those expectations.

Key

Accountabilities Institution Financial Strategy
  • Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with institutional priorities to optimize financial performance.
  • Lead institutional financial planning and multi‑year forecasting.
  • Provide strategic financial recommendations to the Board and senior leadership in partnership with the CEO.
  • Prepare analyses supporting major organizational investments and initiatives.
  • Support Board as the liaison for both the Audit & Finance and Investment Review Committees.
  • Work with external auditor to deliver the annual audit and 990.
  • Partner with TMA’s investment consultant to oversee the Museum’s substantial endowment.
  • Serve as a member of the Museum’s Enterprise Risk Management team.
  • Manage operational cash flow, investments, debt, and financial risk management.
  • Monitor financial performance, analyze variances, and recommend mitigation efforts as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, legal requirements, and regulations.
  • Partner in the development of alternative revenue streams, including accounting and structure.
Revenue Strategy & Executive Business Partnership
  • Work closely with the Chief Development Officer regarding campaign planning, endowment strategy, restricted gifts, and philanthropic forecasting.
  • Develop financial analyses supporting exhibitions, visitor experience, retail, earned revenue, and entrepreneurial initiatives.
