POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides leadership and resources to advance local climate and sustainability efforts. The Sustainability Manager supports community and City of Toledo projects that align with the impact areas of the City’s adopted climate and sustainability plan. The impact areas include, but are not limited to, community health, building performance and energy, environmental quality, waste reduction, biodiversity, healthy food accessibility, sustainable economic development, climate resiliency, and climate action plan tracking.

Work with regional partners to achieve the goals and objectives of the partnerships; develop and administer programs and initiatives related to sustainability principles. Provide technical and administrative support to City of Toledo personnel, and engage in such areas as compliance with federal and state regulations, industry standards and applicable codes. Perform related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Manages, coordinates, facilitates, and advises the development, implementation, monitoring, and improvement of local government policies, programs, and initiatives that promote local environmental, energy, economic, and social sustainability, waste reduction, biodiversity, healthy food accessibility, community health, sustainable economic development, climate resiliency, and climate action plan. Champion integration of social equity into all climate, sustainability, and resilience programming, policy, and planning.
  • Facilitates the establishment of sustainability and climate goals.
  • Coordinates the implementation of the City's Sustainability Action Plan to include performance standards and benchmarking reports where available.
  • Develops, implements and coordinates environmental and sustainability programs and projects in areas such as: water and energy efficiency; green building; watershed management; sustainable procurement and hazardous materials management.
  • Analyzes and reports on the effectiveness of sustainability projects, establishes annual performance targets on the City's progress in meeting those goals, develops action plans to address areas not meeting expectations.
  • Provides information and assistance to the public and City staff on programs related to sustainability and environmental programs and policies.
  • Drafts policies for consideration concerning methods and practices to increase sustainability and climate efforts throughout the community, and comply with City, State, and Federal requirements.
  • Prepares, analyzes and coordinates program and/or project budgets.
  • Prepares and manages annual budget of the sustainability programs.
  • Conducts quantitative and qualitative analyses.
  • Prepares reports and recommendations for consideration by management.
  • Maintains channels of publicity (including website and social media) on the City’s sustainability initiatives.
  • Communicates sustainability project status milestones to internal departments and external partners.
  • Attends, holds, and initiates City and community meetings on sustainability issues.
  • Develops and implements recommendations to improve the effectiveness of sustainable-oriented programs.
  • Assists in managing and coordinating sustainability-related projects in and among different City departments.
  • Works with City departments to enhance the sustainability of current and future infrastructure investments in City of Toledo.
  • Works with City departments to collect data and track progress on sustainability goals and initiatives.
  • Works with federal, state, and county partners to develop and promote legislative measures to support and enhance sustainability practices, which may include the acquisition of funding for projects within the City.
  • Monitors and tracks the implementation and maintenance of the City's climate action plan.
  • Monitors performance of environmental management and sustainability initiatives.
  • Works with external partners, including non‑profits, residents, and businesses, to accelerate the pace and impact of sustainability efforts.

  • Identifies and pursue funding sources including federal, state, and private funds to support sustainability programs and initiatives.
