Licensed Practical Nurse
Administers nursing care within the scope of practice under the direction of a registered nurse, physician, dentist, podiatrist, optometrist, or chiropractor. Administers oxygen and applies sterile dressings. Inserts catheters and reinserts gastrotomy tubes. Suctions and irrigates wounds. Gives enemas and douches, and collects specimens. Performs dialysis treatments, operates hemodialysis equipment, and monitors patients during the procedure. Assists physicians with physical exams, treatments, and laboratory tests.
Assists in emergencies by administering first aid, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and restraining patients. Administers controlled drugs such as narcotics and non-controlled medication in various forms and provides medication instructions to patients. Maintains medication accountability records including patient charts, medication preparations, counts, and medical supply stock. Observes, documents, and reports patient conditions including medication reactions and treatment responses. Prepares and maintains related reports and records such as unusual incident reports and patient records.
Provides general nursing care and programming assistance. Takes patient vital signs and assists with daily living activities such as personal grooming and hygiene. Administers topical ointments and solutions, and repositions patients. Responds to patient alarms, makes medical appointments, escorts patients, and assists with recreational activities. Provides one-on-one group activities according to the treatment plan. Provides work direction, orientation, and training to lower-level direct care staff in unskilled nursing care.
Participates in various meetings and training programs as assigned. Knowledge of skilled licensed practical nursing procedures, pharmacology, first aid, CPR, and general healthcare practices. Skill in the use of medical equipment. Biennial renewal of licensure as a practical nurse is required. Obtaining and maintaining CPR certification is necessary.
