Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN General)
Administers nursing care within the scope of practice as set forth in Division (F) of Section 4723.01 of the Ohio Revised Code under the direction of a registered nurse, licensed physician, dentist, podiatrist, optometrist, or chiropractor. Administers oxygen, applies sterile dressings, inserts catheters, reinserts gastrotomy tubes, suctions, irrigates wounds, and gives enemas. Collects specimens, performs dialysis treatments, operates hemodialysis equipment, and monitors patients during procedures.
Assists physicians with physical exams, treatments, and/or laboratory tests. Assists in emergencies by administering first aid, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and/or restraining patients. Administers controlled drugs such as narcotics and minor tranquilizers, as well as non-controlled medications in oral, rectal, topical, or injectable form (intramuscular and subcutaneous injections only), and provides medication instructions to patients. Maintains medication accountability records. Observes, documents, and reports patient conditions, medication reactions, treatment responses, patient behavior, and progress.
Prepares and/or maintains related reports and records. Provides general nursing, direct care, and/or programming assistance. Takes patient vital signs, assists with personal grooming and hygiene, bathing, or daily living activities. Administers topical ointments and solutions, and eye, ear, and/or nose drops. Repositions patients, responds to patient alarms, makes medical appointments for patients, and escorts patients to various activities. Provides assistance to lower-level direct care staff in providing general unskilled nursing care.
Attends and participates in various meetings as assigned. Knowledge of skilled licensed practical nursing procedures, pharmacology, client/patient care, first aid, CPR, and general hospital practices and procedures is required. Skill in the use of medical equipment such as respirators, dialysis machines, sterilizers, and blood pressure cuffs is necessary. Biennial renewal of licensure as a practical nurse and maintenance of CPR certification is required.
