General Function

Provides prompt and friendly service to customers. Operates and monitors self-checkout registers and service counter, operates cash register to complete customer transactions and bag customer’s items, and stocks, replenishes, and faces product throughout the store.

Reporting Relations

Accountable to and reports to:
Store Manager, Center Store Manager, and Fresh Foods Manager. Positions that report to you:
None.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service with caring, concern and patience, treating customers as the most important people in the store.
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner in all areas of the store.
  • Assists customers by escorting them to the products they’re looking for, securing products that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, and passing along customer suggestions or requests.
  • Answers the telephone promptly and provides helpful service to callers.
  • Works with co‑workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
  • Assists customers with their orders at the self‑checkout lanes.
  • Processes refunds and department‑approved refunds.
  • Operates a cash register to complete customer transactions accurately and promptly, including bagging, redeeming promotional coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, issuing rain checks, receiving cash, checks, completing credit‑card charge transactions, and handling in‑store charges and discounts.
  • Counts back change and issues receipts, sells and redeems lottery tickets, and processes rental transactions for Rug Doctors.
  • Answers customer questions and concerns, and follows up with appropriate personnel.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and company policies on sales of tobacco, liquor, lottery tickets, and WIC/food stamp guidelines.
  • Knows value, look-up numbers, department numbers, and features of items for which money is received.
  • Stocks, faces, rotates merchandise, cleans shelves, understands shelf tags, and knows location of merchandise both in the store and backroom.
  • Reviews weekly store ad to note price changes and sale items, keeps register area clean, ensures adequate supplies, and reports improper cash levels in the drawer.
  • May give cash refunds or issue credit memorandums to customers for returned merchandise or direct customers appropriately.
  • Practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures the work area is always clean and neat.
  • Maintains strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists store management as required (e.g., store displays, decorations for special promotion/events).
  • Knows code dates on perishable items and can explain them to customers.
  • Cleans registers, restrooms, breakroom, backroom, sweeps and mops floors, and tends to supply needs.
  • Performs other job-related duties, assists in other areas of the store, and works on special projects as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics
  • Can carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions.
  • Deals with a few concrete variables.
  • Performs arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Understands and follows verbal or demonstrated instructions; writes identifying information; requests supplies verbally or in writing.
Education and Experience

Less than High School or equivalent experience.

Physical Requirements
  • physically able to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. (Can be accommodated)
  • Visual requirements include vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Working Conditions
  • This position is frequently exposed to temperature extremes and possible dampness.
  • There are possible equipment movement hazards from a pallet jack, electrical shock, and exposure to chemicals and solvents.
  • This is a fast‑paced work environment.
Equipment Used to Perform Job

Pallet jack, box cutter, cash registers, trash compactor, forklift (fork lift), calculator, telephone, intercom, cardboard compactor, copier, and fax.
