Position Summary
Under general supervision the Tandem Truck Driver will perform work of moderate difficulty in the operation of tandem‑axle trucks; performs related work as required.
Essential Job Functions- Operates tandem‑axle trucks including tank trucks, refuse packers, dump trucks and roll‑off trucks.
- Operates various mechanical attachments, controls and power‑take‑off units mounted on the vehicle.
- Performs and/or assists mechanic in routine preventive maintenance on assigned equipment to insure proper operating condition; maintains equipment records as required.
- May operate a two‑way radio.
- Uses truck scale to weigh loads.
- Prepares daily log of loads made and a checklist of equipment used.
- Transports men, equipment, material and supplies on a variety of construction and maintenance activities.
- Maintains safe conditions relative to proper placement and securement of truck cargo.
- Works as part of crew in loading and unloading tools, parts, materials and wastes.
- Cleans bed of truck as required.
- Performs routine cleanings, maintenance and/or repairs to streets, alleys and City of Toledo right‑of‑ways.
- Sets up barricades and posts temporary signs for traffic control.
- May utilize picks, shovels and other hand tools in digging holes and in performing other miscellaneous cleaning, maintenance or repair projects as required.
- Performs a variety of other manual labor duties as required.
- May provide work direction to a small crew of lower class.

- Existing traffic laws, rules and regulations.
- Occupational hazards and the proper safety precautions.
- Operation of heavy‑duty truck.
- Understanding and following quickly and accurately oral and written instructions.
- Directing the performance of an assigned crew.
- Work with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, superiors, vendor representatives and clients.
- Must be able to read at an eighth (8th) grade reading level.
- One (1) year of experience in the operation of a tandem‑axle truck OR two (2) years of experience in the operation of a single‑axle dump truck or closely related vehicle having a rating of at least 35,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight.
Special Requirements
- Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License without restrictions and with specific endorsements as required by the State of Ohio.

This employee will be constantly driving a city vehicle. This employee will occasionally lift, push, pull, drag and/or move up to 50 pounds.
The employee will constantly walk in all‑weather conditions. Occasional stooping, kneeling, crawling and crouching may occur with this position. Speaking and listening are constant essential functions of this position.

This employee will be driving to multiple worksites. The noise level in the work environment is loud. This employee will be exposed to dust and odors frequently.
