Special Education Teacher - Flexible Academic & Behavioral Support (Grades 6-8)

Position Overview

Tolland Middle School is seeking a collaborative, empathetic, and proactive Special Education Teacher to lead a flexible support setting while actively contributing to our building-wide academic and behavioral frameworks.

This role serves middle school students who benefit from periodic, as-needed support to navigate behavioral and emotional barriers. In addition to managing this support space, you will collaborate closely with general education teams to deliver targeted academic interventions, engage in the MTSS process, and complete educational evaluations for PPTs, and write actionable IEPs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Multidisciplinary Team Leadership:
Direct and collaborate daily with a specialized support team - including a BCBA, Applied Behavior Interventionists (ABIs), and Paraprofessionals - to implement behavior plans, regulation strategies, and IEP accommodations.
  • MTSS & Tiered Academic Interventions:
Collaborate with building teachers to deliver specialized Tier 2 and Tier 3 academic interventions (e.g., reading or math support) to bridge skill gaps and keep students on track as needed.
  • Evaluation & IEP Case Management:
Administer educational testing and evaluations for upcoming PPTs, write comprehensive IEP goals/objectives, and track individual student progress.
  • SEL & Behavioral Growth:
Guide students through their specific goals while providing executive functioning coaching and self-advocacy skill building.
  • Family Partnership:
Maintain regular, compassionate communication with families as trusted partners in their child's academic, social, and emotional growth.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience administering educational testing, interpreting diagnostic data, writing IEPs, and facilitating PPT meetings.
  • Proven skill in delivering and supporting MTSS frameworks.
  • Experience supporting students academically, socially, and behaviorally.

Strong communication skills to direct specialized support staff and consult effectively with administration and general education colleagues.
