Purpose Statement
The role of a Paraprofessional is to provide support to the educational process with specific responsibilities for the instructional program within the assigned classroom, working with individuals or small groups of students, and offering clerical support to teachers and staff. The position reports to the assigned administrator.
Essential Functions- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of a supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
- Administer classroom assignments, tests, homework, and make‑up work to support teachers in the instructional process.
- Assist students individually or in small groups with lesson assignments (e.g., read stories, listen to students read, provide writing assistance, reinforce English lessons, provide spelling practice, facilitate activities, computer‑learning programs) to practice and reinforce learning concepts and help students reach academic goals and grade‑level standards.
- Attend meetings and in‑service presentations to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
- Implement instructional programs and lesson plans under the supervision of an assigned teacher to present and reinforce learning concepts.
- Maintain classroom equipment, work areas, manual and electronic files, and records to ensure availability of items, provide written reference, create a safe learning environment, and meet mandated requirements.
- Monitor individual and/or groups of students in various settings (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus loading/unloading) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Report observations and incidents (e.g., accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, rule violations, safety conditions) to communicate information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.
- Respond to emergency situations (e.g., injured student, fights) to resolve immediate safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel.
- Support classroom teachers and other school personnel to assist them in implementing curriculum and teaching methodologies.
Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities- Operate standard office equipment including using relevant software applications and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
- Perform basic math with fractions, percentages, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals; write documents following prescribed formats; and present information to others.
- Understand complex, multi‑step written and oral instructions.
- Apply concepts of grammar and punctuation; knowledge of stages of child development and learning styles; and design age‑appropriate activities.
- Schedule activities, meetings, and events; gather and collate data; and use basic job‑related equipment.
- Work flexibly with others in various circumstances; handle data with defined processes; operate equipment with defined methods.
- Communicate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality; set priorities; work as part of a team; and work effectively with constant interruptions.
- Analyze issues and create action plans; interpret guidelines independently; and solve problems using data and equipment.
Work under direct supervision using standardized procedures; lead, guide, and/or coordinate others; operate within a defined budget; and utilize resources from other work units as required. There is continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
Work EnvironmentThe job includes occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing, balancing, and fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 25% sitting, 40% walking, and 35% standing in a hazard‑free environment.
ExperienceJob‑related experience is desired.
EducationAssociate’s degree or equivalent.
Equivalency60 college units or passing score on the Paraprofessional Praxis Exam.
