The Printing Press Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining various types of presses to produce printed materials. This includes inking the presses, loading paper, and adjusting the presses to the paper size. The operator adjusts the ink flow on the ink rollers and configures, monitors, and fine-tunes the printing process using a control panel or computer monitor.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Adjust production settings into the workstation terminals that control automated printing systems.
- Starts presses and pull proofs to check for ink coverage and density, alignment, and registration.
- Reviews job orders to determine quantities to be printed, stock specifications, colors, or special printing instructions.
- Records and controls raw material assigned to jobs, according to the CP-PRN-FRM-001 and 002.
- Feeds paper through press cylinders, adjust feed and tension controls.
- Loads presses with paper and makes necessary adjustments, according to paper size.
- Collects and inspects random samples during print runs to identify any necessary adjustments.
- Adjusts ink fountain flow rates.
- Changes press plates, blankets, or cylinders, as required.
- Cleans presses, makes minor repairs using hand tools.
- Cleans ink fountains, plates, or printing unit cylinders when press runs are completed.
- Secures printing plates to printing units and adjusts tolerances.
- Obtains or mixes ink and fills ink fountains.
- Troubleshoots machinery and monitors automated press operation systems responding to errors or alert messages.
- Verifies that paper and ink meet the specifications for a given job.
- Maintains assigned work tools and equipment.
- Complies with all safety rules, PPE, polices, procedures and practices to include performing lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) of equipment when required.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Production Lead, Shift Supervisor or Department Manager.
- Education – High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience – One year in a manufacturing environment, paper industry preferred / One year as a print/press equipment operator.
- Skills – Basic computer skills;
Basic Math skills;
Mechanical aptitude;
Ability to function independently;
Ability to read, write and speak English;
Good oral and written communication skills.
- Work an 8+ or 12+ hour shift while sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, grasping, use hands to finger, grasp with hands and arms, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and lifting throughout the entire shift.
- Requires the manual movement of cases of finished goods that weight up to 50 pounds.
- Exposed to extreme heat, in-doors in a manufacturing environment that is not air conditioned.
- Occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
- Wear PPE while working, which includes hairnet, hearing protection and safety glasses with side guards.
- Work an 8+ or 12+ hour day shift.
- Able to work weekdays, weekends and overtime.
