Position
Description:
For Wastewater, the position will be assigned night and/or evening shifts after a brief training period. This posting is to fill open positions on both the Water and Wastewater Divisions. Roles may be filled as either a Water/Wastewater Operator I (Trainee) or a Utilities Technician II (Certified Operator in Water or Wastewater), depending on experience and certifications.
Employees perform technical operations, maintenance, and repair of the City s water and wastewater treatment facilities and equipment in compliance with environmental regulations. Duties include field inspections, sample collection, laboratory testing, operating and maintaining treatment processes, operating heavy equipment, completing logs and work orders, monitoring reclaim water systems, gas chlorination equipment, auto samplers, managing biosolids, and ensuring safe and effective operation within parameters.
Specific tasks may vary.
Qualifications
A High School diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited institution. A valid Arizona driver s license is required.
Operator I (Trainee)
- No ADEQ certification required at hire.
- Must obtain an ADEQ Grade 1 Wastewater/Water Treatment Operator certification within one (1) year of hire.
Utilities Technician II (Certified Operator)
- Requires a valid ADEQ Grade 2 Wastewater/Water Treatment Operator certification at time of hire.
Additional Requirements
- The role involves exposure to various hazards, extreme weather, manual labor, confined spaces, and occasional heavy lifting. Operators may work alone and must be available for weekends, nights, holidays, overtime, and emergency call-outs.
- SCBA certification is required for Wastewater.
For Wastewater, the position will be assigned night and/or evening shifts after the completion of a brief training period. For Water, the position will be assigned daytime hours and is subject to weekend shifts and on-call duties.

Positions typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Operator I (Trainee)
Medium:
Exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10 lbs. constantly.
Utilities Technician II (Certified Operator)
Heavy:
Exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, blood and other bodily fluids, and extreme temperatures.

- Utilities Technician II: $26.60-$28.33 Hourly D.O.E.
