Primary

Purpose:

Help special education teacher provide for physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instructional programs. Work under general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of the certified teacher.

Education/Certification:

• Associate’s degree, two years (48 hours) of study at an institute of higher learning, or have met formal academic assessment requirements.
• Valid Texas Educational Aide certificate from the State Board for Educators. Certification will be recommended by the district upon hire.

Special Knowledge and

Skills:

• Ability to work with children with disabilities.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Knowledge of general office equipment.
• Basic first aid knowledge and CPR.

Minimum Experience:

• Prior experience working with children.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions. Moderate walking, standing, heavy lifting and carrying of students up to 53 pounds; climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Responsibilities require contact with individuals that may include exposure to disruptive behavior and exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
