Assistant City Planner Responsibilities
- Conduct research on issues, policies, and concepts pertaining to planning, zoning, and community development.
- Prepare written reports and recommendations in response to public requests for zoning applications and various ordinance changes.
- Assist with long‑term Comprehensive planning, updating of City maps, land use and development regulations.
- Prepare proposals in draft form for amendments to the zoning ordinance, subdivision ordinance, and other documents and ordinances governing local planning, zoning, and development.
- Conduct research and analysis on issues related to economic, housing, labor force, transportation, infrastructure, land use, and community development trends as requested.
- Prepare and present technical reviews regarding development and land proposals, including site plans, subdivision plats, etc.
- Draft Planning and Zoning Commission and Board of Adjustments annual reports.
- Meet with the general public to discuss planning, zoning, and development issues; assist the public to define concerns and present public questions to management; follow up with public to apprise of city policy and decisions.
- Prepare staff input for Planning and Zoning Commission and Board of Adjustment meetings; present findings and answer questions regarding agenda items.
- Participate in public meetings.
- Manage Planning‑specific GIS layers, creating, editing, and maintaining Planning GIS data.
- Create, manage, and maintain Zoning GIS case maps.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Working knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures related to City and regional planning and zoning administration.
- Ability to interpret ordinances accurately and effectively.
- Familiarity with GIS software is preferred.
- High level of computer skills, with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.

The work is typically performed indoors in an office setting. Work may involve potentially life‑threatening exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, noise, chemicals/gases, contagious diseases, airborne particles/pathogens, and/or physical trauma. May regularly be exposed to uncomfortable temperatures, humidity, noise, chemicals/gases, contagious diseases, airborne particles/pathogens, and/or physical trauma. May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
Physical Abilities- Ability to sit, stand, walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to complete repetitive wrist, hand, and/or fine motor movement.
- Ability to talk, hear, listen, and comprehend.
- Ability to drive and/or operate mechanical equipment.
- Visual acuity of 20 feet or more, visual acuity of 20 inches or less, three‑dimensional vision, precise hand/eye coordination, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
- Must be able to lift up to 5 pounds.
- Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
- Bachelor in a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of previous relevant work experience.
- AICP (preferred).
- Drivers License.
