Tutoring
The Position
This position provides tutorial assistance to students remotely online and/or onsite, in math subject areas and, in collaboration with other department staff, ensures that the appropriate level of service is provided to students. This position is under the TRIO Student Support Services program (grant funded) which serves low‑income students, first‑generation students and students with disabilities.
Classification:
Casual/As‑Needed
- Provide students with face‑to‑face and virtual tutorial assistance in the content area identified in the posting; develop resources, conduct class visits, create and facilitate workshops as requested.
- Maintain records of each tutoring session and update the database for accuracy; provide written and Excel reports regarding activities as assigned.
- Meet regularly with designated management in Tutoring Center to ensure the appropriate level of services are offered; document and report student or personnel issues to designated management in a timely manner.
- Assist in training and mentoring new professional and peer tutors.
- Attend training and professional development sessions as required and maintain competency in training materials provided by the Tutoring Center and other College staff.
- Maintain appropriate competency in content area(s) as well as maintaining computer literacy and technology skills.
- Help monitor equipment (hardware & software); document and report issues to designated management in a timely manner.
- Answer phones, greet, and assist visitors, and perform routine clerical tasks.
- Related projects and initiatives as assigned.
- Ability to tutor at the 200‑course level or above. Submission of unofficial transcripts is required.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; prior database or instructional technology experience preferred.
- Self‑motivated and directed with the ability to work a combination of remote and/or onsite face‑to‑face tutoring sessions as assigned.
- $20/hr:
Master’s degree in directly related field of tutoring discipline assigned and one year of teaching or tutoring experience. - $19.06/hr:
Bachelor’s degree in directly related field of tutoring discipline assigned and one year of teaching or tutoring experience. - $17.00/hr:
Associate’s degree or sixty (60) college credits in directly related field of tutoring discipline assigned and six (6) months teaching or tutoring experience.
- Prior experience using student database systems such as Colleague.
- Demonstrated experience working with underserved populations.
- TEFL or TESOL Certification.
- Bilingual or Multilingual.
Time Off
OCC follows the NJ Sick Leave Law, providing one (1) hour of sick leave per every thirty (30) hours worked. A maximum of forty (40) hours may be accrued.
