Biomed Technician

Job Overview

The BMET I demonstrates confidence in using electronic test equipment to diagnose and service medical equipment. He/she will ensure all medical equipment meets manufacturer specifications and is safe for patient care. They can assist clinical staff in the use of medical equipment, document all work performed, and participate in the Biomedical Engineering emergency on‑call program.

• Minimum AAS degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology or equivalent work/military experience in Biomedical Engineering.
• No experience to 3 years of hands‑on experience.

• Basic knowledge of hand tools.
• Basic knowledge of electricity/electronics.
• Knowledge of MS Office and other computer applications.
• Knowledge of basic electronic test equipment.
• Medical equipment manufacture certification.
• Eligible for AAMI/ICC certification.
• Basic knowledge of types of medical equipment and medical terminology.
• Basic knowledge of electromechanical components.

• Days to work: 8A‑4P M‑F, occasional Saturday.
• Full‑Time.
• Working location(s):
  Toms River, NJ with possible local travel to other RWJBH sites.

• Conduct preventive maintenance inspections appropriate to job competency using appropriate productivity & quality measures.
• Complete monthly assigned tasks within specified time frames, prioritizing high‑risk equipment.
• Recognize unsafe conditions and notify management to correct them.
• Work collaboratively with senior technical staff to create & enter PM procedures following manufacturer guidelines.
• Respond to service requests, troubleshoot & repair medical equipment within competence level using established productivity & quality measures, demonstrating good judgment on component vs. circuit board level repairs.
• Maintain adequate parts inventory to minimize downtime.
• Document service requests and repairs accurately in the biomedical equipment database.
• Inspect new devices & equipment with appropriate proficiency, ensuring safety, compliance, and understanding new device performance.
• Secure device information for the biomedical equipment database.
• Maintain current service and operator manuals on hand for proper servicing of all types of medical equipment.
• Assist Manager in maintaining department regulatory requirements and goals.
• Comply with system, hospital and departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
• Report witnessed violations that jeopardize patients, staff, department or facility to appropriate management.
• Demonstrate thorough knowledge of shop safety and use of electronic test equipment.
• Assist Manager with responding to/correcting medical equipment recalls/device alerts from manufacturers and/or FDA.
• Participate in on‑call duties after normal working hours, responding to a call within 15 minutes by telephone and reporting to the facility within one hour if on‑site is required.
• Provide technical instruction to users over the phone to minimize equipment downtime while ensuring continuity of patient care and organizational cost effectiveness.
