Performs a variety of duties in association with transmission and distribution of a water system while adhering to and complying with company procedures, safety policies, and regulatory guidelines. Tasks may include service and maintaining control valves, hydrants, blow‑offs; flushing and maintaining fire hydrants; operating valves manually and as machine operator; reading as‑built drawings and interpreting blueprints to revise and maintain water atlases;
maintaining the preventive maintenance database; providing miscellaneous support to other Operation and Maintenance groups regarding shutdowns, traffic control, repair and construction crew assistance. The Utility Technician will also flex into and/or perform work in the capacity of Field Service Representative when required or directed. The employee will participate in the standby program as a primary responder.
- Install new or replacement water distribution system mains, services and fire hydrants with appurtenances.
- Repair, maintain and/or operate water distribution facilities and associated equipment (mains, services, fire hydrants, valves, air compressors, tapping machines, portable ditch pumps, electrical generators, pipe leak detection equipment, hand tools) without direct supervision.
- Read and understand the valve maintenance program.
- Use accepted practices and methods for water line and appurtenance installation or replacement and their proper maintenance and repair.
- Properly use and care for hand tools.
- Perform functions of a Field Service Representative as required.
- Know and abide by company safety policies and procedures.
High School Diploma or GED required.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Operation and use of a variety of power‑driven and heavy construction tools and equipment in skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work, including operation of specialized trucks.
- Use and principles of computerized electronic equipment for the collection, storage, and interpretation of water system operational data.
- Methods and techniques for locating water mains and shutting off water service.
- Methods and techniques for maintaining and repairing water distribution systems.
- Operational characteristics of a variety of maintenance equipment, tools, and vehicles.
- Principles and procedures of record keeping.
- Safe work practices, including procedures for operating power and heavy construction equipment, working in traffic, confined spaces, open trenches and other hazardous conditions.
- Comprehension of oral and written instructions and communication in English.
- Eligibility for overtime.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Availability for night, weekend, holiday, overtime work and on‑call assignments.
- Ability to perform tasks with minimum supervision.
- Understanding and following oral and written directions to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely manner.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Valid New Jersey driver’s license.
- Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License, or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
- Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment: walking including uneven terrain; climbing hills and stairs; standing and sitting for prolonged periods; frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, reaching, twisting, grasping, and making repetitive hand movements.
- Ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull moderate amounts of weight up to 90 pounds on a frequent basis.
- Must be able to see clearly and hear, and be able to speak and converse with others.
Pay: $33.03 per hour.
