A Business Minor or Certification is a great way to add-on to your experience and education as you prepare for your professional career. We offer a Business Minor for non-business students, as well as minors in International Business and Economics. The School also offers certifications in Entrepreneurship and Insurance.

The business minor is designed to provide the non-business student with an understanding of the essentials of business methods and practices. Students in communication, mass media, computer information systems and other areas find that the business minor helps them to understand the business content that they will face as they begin their careers.

Students must successfully complete a total of 21 hours as specified below.

Required Courses:

  • One of the following:

      Organizational Behavior
  • Six additional upper division hours from accounting, business, or economics

Business Data Analytics Minor

The School of Business Minor in Business Data Analytics is designed for non-Business (non-BBA) students who are interested in enhancing their area of study with the understanding of Data Analytics. Students must successfully complete 15 hours as specified below:

  • BU248 Foundations of Data Analysis
  • BU250 Management Information Systems
  • DA348 Data Discovery
  • DA358 Data Methods & Warehousing OR DA368 Data Mining and Modeling
Business Minor with Entrepreneurship Certificate

The Business Minor and the Entrepreneurship Certificate can be earned at the same time by using entrepreneurship courses as electives within the business minor. This combination will enable students who want to start their own venture, operate a family business or become a champion of change within a large corporate organization. The program exposes students to various business disciplines and how to create a detailed business plan for a start-up venture.

Innovation and creativity are explored to understand how ideas can be brought to reality and commercialized. Students will also have the opportunity to launch their ventures in the capstone clinic class. The additional courses in accounting, economics, and management form a well-rounded business foundation to supplement entrepreneurship courses.

A grade of C or better must be earned in each course used to satisfy the requirements for the minor and for the Entrepreneurship Certificate. Half of the hours used to meet the requirements of the minor and of the Certificate must be earned at Washburn University.

International Business Minor

Globalization and international business have become the norm in today’s world. Many businesses, large and small, are involved in international business either directly or indirectly. Because of this dramatic shift to globalism in the business world, a great demand for graduates with an academic background in international business has developed.

This background includes not only course work in business with an international flavor, but also courses dealing with the differences and similarities among people. You will obtain this knowledge by taking a course of study that includes a foreign language and understanding of different cultures in addition to business courses.

The international business minor has three components:

  • Required business and economics courses
  • Required language courses
  • Recommended international experience
