Position: Parent Educator (PAT) @ Districtwide

Auburn-Washburn Unified School District 437 is a district consisting of 128 square miles of suburban and rural areas in southwest Topeka and Shawnee county. Presently, we have 13 total attendance centers — one early childhood center, seven elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and two alternative learning centers.

Job Description

SALARY: $15.50/hour

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 8 hours/day, 12 months/year (benefits-eligible)

JOB GOAL: To provide leadership and coordination of the Parents As Teachers program according to guidelines established by the Kansas State Department of Education and Parents As Teachers National Center.

REPORTS TO: Lead Parent Educator of Parents As Teachers Program

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Lead Parent Educator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Promote public understanding and support of the Parents as Teachers program.
  • Implement referrals and schedule assessments.
  • Conduct home visits and facilitate parent group meetings every six to eight weeks (minimum).
  • Implement the curriculum provided by the National Parents as Teachers Center.
  • Gather family data and maintain records of contact with families.
  • Collaborate with community agencies in providing services to improve health and welfare of families.
  • Provide information regarding child development and appropriate childrearing practices.
  • Provide information regarding neuroscience research and the implications for child development.
  • Individualize presentations for each family.
  • Share results of screening with parents/guardians.
  • Observe strengths of parent(s) and child(ren) and recognize behavior and/or development of child(ren) deviating from the expected norm.
  • Identify inappropriate parental expectations and/or childrearing strategies.
  • Help parent(s) to be observers, to take responsibility for decisions regarding their child(ren)’s development, and to be actively involved in activities with their child(ren).
  • Research materials and community resources needed to address parental needs, concerns and/or questions.
  • Supervise parent-child playgroups during the assigned working day.
  • Assist in publications and mailing of monthly newsletter.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings.
  • Assist in maintaining resource library.
  • Assist in planning and facilitating group meetings.
  • Compile and submit evaluation data.
  • Assume responsibility for professional growth to meet requirements for annual re-certification according to Parents as Teachers National Center guidelines.
  • Practice confidentiality.
  • Practice good interpersonal skills.
  • Supports the District’s educational mission for all students and implements all Board regulations and policies in a fair and equitable manner.
  • QUALIFICATIONS
    • Demonstrated ability to work with young children and parents.
    • Certified through National Parents as Teachers Center.
    • Twenty hours of inservice per year.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Talking:
    Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing:
    Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
  • Sedentary work:
    Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Work involves sitting most of the time.
  • Minimum standard based on the criteria of accuracy and neatness of work for teachers.
  • The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
