Position Overview
The Information Technology Open Rank Professor of the Practice position is an administrative and non‑tenure‑track teaching role. The appointed faculty will teach undergraduate programs in Information Technology (IT) and Applied Cybersecurity, the Bachelor of Professional Studies concentration in Applied Data Analytics, the Master’s program in Information Technology, and associated graduate certificate programs at the Edwards Campus. Instruction will take place in in‑person, hybrid, and online formats.
The appointment is a fiscal year (12‑month) position with an initial term of three years and a typical course load of eight classes each year. Subsequent appointments may be offered contingent upon a satisfactory comprehensive performance evaluation during the final year of this appointment and approval of the Dean of the School of Professional Studies.
The KU School of Professional Studies (SPS) was created in 2019 to transform students’ lives and improve communities through innovative, student‑focused academic programs. SPS offers a variety of disciplines, course formats, class schedules, student services, aid, and more to meet the needs of diverse students who may work full‑time, have considerable commitments outside the classroom, have prior college‑level education, or otherwise need a different approach to earning academic credentials.
SPS continues to launch new degree programs aimed at supporting the needs of future students and is poised for significant growth over the next five years.

This position serves the educational needs of several Johnson County Education Research Triangle (JCERT) programs. Specific percentages of effort for JCERT are determined each year.
The position is subject to a collective bargaining agreement between The University of Kansas and United Academics, that UAKU is the exclusive representative for the bargaining unit, and that it is their right to be a member or not be a member of a union without fear of personal or professional repercussions.
Teaching – 80%- Teach eight courses per year in the IT Programs in the School of Professional Studies.
- Develop curriculum, design instruction, manage virtual classrooms, and conduct grading and teaching improvement.
- Keep curricula up to date and engage with external organizations to ensure relevance to a variety of workplace needs.
- Provide adequate means to evaluate student performance, including examinations and assignments such as papers, projects, presentations, etc., and grading.
- Professional service includes actively promoting the programs, enhancing and improving curriculum, engaging in scholarly, pedagogical, and professional development activities, mentoring students, and collaborating with faculty and staff at the KUEC in promotional activities.
- Stay current on IT industry developments and academic best practices.
- Minimum master’s degree in Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, or its equivalent in a closely related field.
- Demonstrated record of teaching excellence in Information Technology or a closely related field.
- Years of related experience in Information Technology for each rank:
- Assistant Professor of the Practice: 3–5 years.
- Associate Professor of the Practice: 5–15 years.
- Professor of the Practice: 15+ years.
- Excellence in written communication skills as demonstrated in application materials.
- Three (3) years of leadership experience as demonstrated in application materials.
