Position Overview

KU’s Wingspan:
Center for Learning and Writing Support offers a portfolio of collaborative, innovative academic support programs and services to students, faculty, and staff. KU’s Wingspan provides individual and group support through its Peer Academic Coaching program, Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, Tutoring Services, and Writing Center Services. The Wingspan is a part of the University Academic Support Centers (UASC), a comprehensive student support program consisting of two unique centers designed to strengthen the academic skills and written communication of students at the University of Kansas.

UASC supports the University’s commitment to the academic success and holistic development of students. UASC programs encourage student participation both in and out of the classroom, support academic and personal development, and link students to other campus and community resources for academic and personal support and development. University Academic Support Centers is a department within Academic Affairs.

The Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader plays a key role in enhancing student learning and academic success. SI Leaders facilitate peer‑led group study sessions for students enrolled in historically challenging courses. By offering regular, collaborative study sessions, SI Leaders help students develop study strategies, reinforce course content, and improve their academic performance. SI Leaders are expected to attend all course lectures, model effective study habits, and create a welcoming learning environment.

SI Leaders must be available to attend the lectures and then prepare for study sessions that are held twice a week. To prepare for their roles, SI Leaders are expected to attend a multi‑day training prior to the start of their sessions as well as SI Leader meetings that are held biweekly throughout the semester.

Job Description 50% – Facilitate Weekly SI Sessions and Attend All Class Lecture
  • Plan and lead structured study sessions that are interactive and encourage student participation.
  • Develop practice problems, discussion questions, study guides, and other instructional materials to support learning during SI sessions.
  • Attend all class lectures for the designated course every week to be familiar with all homework, exams, and assignments in the selected class.
20% – Collaborate with Faculty and SI Manager
  • Collaborate with faculty to stay informed about upcoming exams, quizzes, and any areas of concern for students.
  • Maintain open communication with the SI Manager to discuss session progress, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
20% – Professional Development
  • Attend SI Leader training and meetings to stay informed on best practices, institutional policies, and program updates.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development activities, such as peer observation and feedback reviews to enhance your effectiveness as an SI Leader.
10% – Promote SI Sessions
  • Actively promote SI sessions to students by making announcements in class, sending emails, or using other communication tools to encourage attendance.
Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of a B letter grade in the selected class.
  • Ability to work 6–10 hours per week, including afternoon and evening availability to lead SI sessions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong proven verbal communication skills, as evidenced by the interview.
  • In good academic standing.
  • Experience leading small groups as shown in application material.
  • Experience providing academic support and/or tutoring.
Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre‑enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester.
