Position Overview
The Police Instructor assists in instruction of students in basic, advanced, and specialized law enforcement classes, seminars, and workshops at KLETC and outreach sites across Kansas. The instructor is responsible for development of curriculum and learning objectives for general police subjects and is responsible for instruction of basic training and in‑service training classes at KLETC and outreach sites.
Responsibilities- Conduct instruction of students in basic, advanced and specialized law enforcement classes, courses, seminars and workshops at KLETC and outreach sites throughout Kansas.
- Utilize diverse instructional methodologies based on proven adult learning principles while presenting classroom and practical, scenario‑based performance outcome training classes.
- Research, develop and evaluate practical application training exercises.
- Design and deliver advanced training classes and seminars taught to local, state and federal law enforcement officers.
- Attend advanced training courses, seminars and workshops nationally to stay abreast of the latest information, techniques, methods and strategies of contemporary law enforcement operations.
- Maintain a general knowledge of all areas of law enforcement to assist other instructors in presentation of their assigned areas of instruction.
- Provide student officers with academic counseling services, evaluate students, and participate on curriculum committees and other instructional duties.
- Develop curricula, learning objectives, lesson plans and handout reference materials for all certified and authorized basic law enforcement training academy programs in Kansas.
- Conduct research in assigned fields to stay informed of latest trends, theories and methodologies.
- Design and develop new law enforcement curriculum based on research, surveys and job task analysis, and distribute to all Kansas law enforcement academy programs.
- Review current curriculum to assess and analyze validity.
- Develop defensible test items and evaluation matrices for academic and practical application assessment.
- Initiate curriculum content changes based on statute changes, court decisions or research.
- Recruit, train and schedule law enforcement officers from Kansas agencies to assist with practical training.
- Assist agencies in developing training programs, hiring and promotional interview processes, and provide expert instructional and curriculum development assistance.
- Provide reports and recommendations concerning training equipment, inventory, maintenance, facility, budgetary and personnel needs.
- Be trained to instruct firearms, emergency vehicle operation, physical defense tactics, vehicle stops and practical training in officer survival.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Valid Kansas driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
- Bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
- Five years of increasingly responsible experience as a full‑time, state or federal certified law enforcement officer.
- Effective written communication skills, as evidenced in application materials.
- Proof of education in the form of an official transcript from an accredited institution.
- Bachelor’s degree in adult education or a related discipline, from an institution accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
- Post‑bachelor’s degree or progress toward such a degree in a related discipline, from an accredited institution.
- Ten or more years of full‑time experience as a Kansas state‑certified law enforcement officer.
- Experience in the training, education, and/or instruction of adults.
- Experience as a law enforcement instructor in a training academy or college setting.
