Job DescriptionPurpose Statement
The job of Parent Educator is to empower parents with the knowledge and skills necessary to support the development of their children during the crucial early years by providing support for parents prenatal to kindergarten entry, promoting their involvement, providing information and/or direction, assisting parents in goal setting and educational development, developing and refining program materials, and assisting in transitioning students to preschool and kindergarten.
EssentialFunctions
- Assess individual children's developmental progress for the purpose of providing feedback to parents on areas of strength and areas for growth.
- Communicate with families before and after visits for the purpose of clarifying issues and ensuring follow‑through.
- Conduct home visits for the purpose of providing individualized lessons and assessing family needs.
- Develop and implement personalized visit plans based on family goals and identified areas of improvement using Parents as Teachers curriculum for the purpose of educating parents on childhood development centered parenting and family well‑being.
- Facilitate a variety of events (e.g., parent‑child learning experiences, mass screenings, monthly parent groups, parent workshops, etc.) for the purpose of decreasing parental isolation, developing parent involvement with their child's school activities, and supporting the educational and social‑emotional needs of families.
- Maintain a variety of confidential and non‑confidential manual and electronic lists and records (e.g., work/appointment schedules, assessments, interventions, progress reports, parent resources, demographics, etc.) for the purpose of documenting and/or providing reliable information.
- Participate in a variety of meetings, workshops and committees (e.g., parent‑student workshops, educational seminars, department in‑service, reflective sessions, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and remain knowledgeable with program guidelines.
- Prepare a variety of documents, reports and written materials (e.g., screening summaries, visit records, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to parents, staff; providing written support, developing recommendations and/or conveying information.
- Provide support to parents (e.g., evaluating situations, solving problems, resolving conflicts, referral to appropriate professionals, literature, etc.) for the purpose of promoting healthy child development and family well‑being.
- Refer students and parents to outside agencies for the purpose of meeting the needs of the students.
- Respond to inquiries from a variety of internal and external sources (e.g., early education teachers, outside agencies, parents and/or students, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or direction as may be required.
- Respond to potential emergencies encountered during home visits for the purpose of ensuring safety of students and/or personnel.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills and Abilities
Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge‑based competencies required include infant and preschool development stages, parenting methods, community resources, age‑appropriate activities/behaviors, assessment instruments and techniques.
