Position: Instructor | French (POOL)

Position Overview
The Department of French & Italian at the University of Kansas seeks individuals qualified to teach part-time undergraduate courses in French. The Instructor is an instructional, adjunct faculty position that is not eligible for tenure or promotion in rank. This is a term appointment for the Fall 2026 semester. Renewal will be based upon unit needs and funding as well as performance that meets expectations, not to exceed two continuous semesters.

Positions vary and are dependent upon the need for instructors, if any, for courses being offered each semester.
Amount of work required can vary by position and will range in FTE.
This position is subject to acollective bargaining agreement between The University of Kansas and United Academics, United Academics of KU, AFT-AAUP, AFL-CIO; UAKU is the exclusive bargaining representative. As the State of Kansas is a right to work state, you have the right to be a member or not be a member of a union without fear of personal or professional repercussions.
The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start date of the position.


Job Description
100% Teach one to four 3-hour or 5-hour courses at the 100-, 200-, 300-, or 400- level.

  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the lecturer must make arrangements for a substitute to teach class. Classes should not be canceled.
  • For asynchronous online courses with no classroom meetings, engage and interact with students via posted videos on course content, video-chat sessions, more frequent email updates, etc
  • Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.
  • Conduct assessments of student learning and comply with department requests for course data on assessment practices and learning outcomes.
  • Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required. These office hours should be divided over at least two and preferably three different days. The lecturer should be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.
  • Adhere to departmental, college and university policies.


Required Qualifications
Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in resume, (3) information provided from professional references, and (4) information provided in course evaluations when available:
For those hired to teach at any courses at the undergraduate level:
  • M.A., ABD, or Ph.D. in French or related arts or humanities discipline
  • Near native or native command of French
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching as evidenced in evaluations of letters of recommendation
For Those Hired To Teach Foreign Language Acquisition Only
  • Bachelor of Arts degree in any discipline with at least ten years of French language proficiency


Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience teaching the course(s) of interest
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching as evidenced in evaluations or letters of recommendation.
  • Experience teaching in hybrid or online formats
  • Training in second language acquisition and/or language pedagogy
