We are seeking a System Protection Engineer to support the design and development of protection and control systems across electric substations, transmission lines, and generation facilities. This role will work closely with engineering teams to deliver reliable, safe, and compliant system designs.
Key ResponsibilitiesThis position is responsible for performing engineering design related to substation, transmission line, and generation equipment control and fault protection systems. The role includes developing protection and control (P&C) designs in collaboration with engineering teams and specifying substation equipment using appropriate ratings such as bus systems, ground mats, conduit, switches, power circuit breakers, transformers, relay panels, instrumentation, capacitor banks, and reactor banks.
The engineer will design protective relay systems, metering, and SCADA solutions based on standards, regulations, and system requirements. Responsibilities also include gathering and analyzing system data such as voltage, ampacity, impedance, CT ratios, and relay settings, and providing reporting data to regulatory agencies such as SPP, NERC, and FERC. Additional duties include developing project scopes and cost estimates to support long‑term planning and budgeting, as well as supporting operations and construction teams with troubleshooting, failure analysis, testing, and commissioning activities.
The role requires reviewing and interpreting technical drawings and specifications to ensure compliance with company standards and codes, as well as directing and supporting designers and technicians by reviewing work and monitoring progress. The engineer will also review and redline protection and control drawings for substations and transmission systems and review detailed bills of material for system protection and control projects.
Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program. A strong understanding of engineering principles and advanced mathematics is required. Candidates should have knowledge of electric power systems, including generation, transmission, and distribution systems, relay protection schemes, and the ability to read and interpret schematic, wiring, and logic diagrams. The role requires the ability to develop relay logic, settings, and elementary drawings.
Candidates must be detail‑oriented, organized, and capable of maintaining accuracy in their work. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross‑functional teams are essential. The ability to manage multiple priorities and perform effectively in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment is also required.
Experience with in the utility industry related to substation, transmission, or generation systems is preferred. Candidates with prior experience in protection and control system design and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and databases, are strongly desired.
