Senior Relay Technicians have demonstrated leadership and the ability to plan and direct the work of others.
Responsibilities include construction and maintenance of system protection and control of substations, interpreting and using the company's plans and specifications, ensuring thorough knowledge of the company's safety rules and practices, and maintaining professional relationships with customers and the public.
Additional qualifications are those listed under the Relay Technician minimum requirements.
Technician, RelaySkilled workers with at least four (4) years of apprenticeship training as a Technician Apprentice, Relay. They possess the necessary knowledge, skill, and physical ability to install, repair, and maintain apparatus, equipment, and wiring used in system protection and control of substations and other equipment.
Provides technical support for other departments.
Minimum qualifications require a two (2) year college degree in electronics or equivalent. A four year Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology degree is preferred. Technicians are qualified through knowledge and experience to assist other Technicians, Relay or Senior Technicians.
Technicians I–IVSkilled workers chosen for a four (4) year apprenticeship to become a Technician, Relay. Minimum qualifications for a Technician, Relay I include a two (2) year college degree in electronics or equivalent. They are qualified through knowledge and experience to assist Technicians, Relay or Senior Technicians.
Preferred Candidate Education- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

- Associate of Applied Science in Electrical Utility Substation & Relay Technology
- Associate of Applied Science in Electrical Utility Substation Technology

- Associate of Applied Science in Electrical & Electromechanical Technology
- Associate of Applied Science in Electronics Technology
- Equivalent to 2 years in Military Electronics core experience and training

The applicant must reside within a 35-mile radius of the Topeka Operations Center and be able to respond to emergency callouts and overtime, sometimes with minimal notice. Work in a wide range of climates and weather conditions, and be prepared for significant overtime demands. Successful completion of the apprenticeship requires routine independent work with minimal direction and a satisfactory work record, including good attendance.
