Substitute Custodian

Substitute Custodian – TOPEKA PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Reports to the school’s Head Custodian or Building Administration. This position is on‑call as needed and may not work every day.

To provide the upkeep, maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and security of the assigned building so a safe, clean environment will be available for teaching and learning while the permanent custodian is absent.

• Ability to work with minimum supervision
• Ability to follow instructions
• Understanding of custodial duties
• Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, hazardous materials, and the proper way to perform the assigned duty
• Ability to perform work independently according to prescribed standards and procedures
• Ability to work in varied weather and temperature conditions
• Good communication skills

The incumbent may be required to use the following skills and abilities during any part of the work day: speaking, hearing, visual, bending/stooping, walking, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, kneeling, standing, lifting 60 pounds, carrying 80 pounds, moving/pulling 300 pounds.

• Respond to requests for services in a timely and courteous manner.
• Accomplish tasks in a safe and efficient manner, such as sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, waxing, polishing, emptying waste receptacles, cleaning restrooms and water fountains, washing windows and walls, and replacing light bulbs and filters.
• Respond to staff and/or administration in a courteous and helpful manner.
• Assist in snow removal or other related duties as assigned.
• Consult a supervisor if there are job problems.
• Demonstrate a professional image through appearance, language, and work ethic.
• Complete a variety of work assignments as assigned.
