Training Director

The Kansas State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services (BIDS) is accepting applications for the position of Training Director, based in the BIDS Administration Office in Topeka, Kansas. This is an attorney position.

The Training Director will lead the agency’s state-wide public defense Training Division, which is responsible for implementing the agency’s training objectives across the trial, appellate, and death penalty defense programs. The Training Director’s programs will meet the needs of all members of the defense team, including the agency’s attorneys, investigators, mitigation specialists, legal assistants, administrative specialists, and administrative staff. The Training Director is an agency leader who must demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to the representation of indigent defendants and exhibit the vision, desire, and ability to implement the highest quality trainings.

The Training Director will oversee the continued development of the BIDS training program and will work collaboratively to expand already existing BIDS training and envision new programs. The Training Director is directly supervised by the Executive Director.

The Mission

The Board of Indigents’ Defense Services, through its regional public defender offices and assigned counsel program, represents adults charged with felonies who cannot hire an attorney. By supporting and elevating public defense in the State of Kansas, BIDS empowers its team to provide relentless representation and collaborative advocacy in service of client-centered outcomes.

The BIDS Administration Office supports the work of all BIDS employees and assigned and contract counsel. Our agency has approximately 285 employees and 19 offices across the state. We are looking for a dynamic, client-centered Training Director who interested in pursuing excellence in public defense training. This position presents a tremendous opportunity to impact public defense representation across the entire state-wide system.

Responsibilities

And Qualifications

The Training Director is a management level position reporting to the Executive Director of the agency. The Training Director supervises supporting program staff, including the Assistant Training Director and the Training Division Administrative Specialist. The Training Director will work closely with the Executive Director, the Director of Special Projects, and other members of BIDS leadership, including trial and appellate Chiefs and Deputies, to envision and implement state-wide programs.

The Training Director has responsibility for the management of the agency's comprehensive state-wide public defense training program. This includes managing and maintaining the online learning management system and producing and distributing training materials, practice guides, and training program evaluations. The Training Director is responsible for working with the Kansas Continuing Legal Education Commission to ensure compliance and approval of all CLE hours offered by BIDS, as well as for reporting all completed hours for participant credit.

We are in search of a candidate who is experienced in criminal defense litigation and who has an established history of successfully organizing and presenting continuing legal education seminars on criminal defense practice, or who has other significant relevant teaching or practical experience. Important skills are collaboration, organization, communication, and vision.

Education
  • Must be a graduate from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Licensed attorney in good standing in the State of Kansas at the time of employment.
Licensing & Certification
  • Maintain licensure as an active attorney in good standing in the State of Kansas.
  • Attorneys licensed in another state must be willing and able to seek admission to the Kansas bar immediately upon hire.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
