Compensation
  • Hourly Pay: $30.03 - $33.89

Trooper Trainees will be hired at $30.03/hour during paid training. Training academy will consist of 21 weeks of rigorous training; this training will be both physically and mentally challenging. Upon graduation the rate of pay will be increased to $33.11/hour. Individuals that meet the threshold, and are approved by executive command staff, may be considered for the opportunity to be a Lateral Transfer.

These individuals will be hired at $33.89/hour. After graduation Trainees will begin 560 hours of field training with a field training officer; approved Lateral Transfer individuals will complete at least 400 hours of field training. The rate of pay will follow the Career Progression Plan based on years in service while employed with the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Training Academy

During the Training Academy, you will receive intensive classroom and practical law enforcement training. You will manage your personal and study time in order to complete assigned projects. You must take and maintain notes and handout materials. You will participate in small group and team exercises. You must practice good judgement and problem‑solving skills, using information presented, policy and procedure guidance, and present acceptable solutions and/or reactions.

You will receive intensive physical fitness training. You will cultivate an understanding of the importance of physical fitness. You will complete multiple physical assessments throughout the Academy, including aerobic capacity tests, dynamic strength tests, and strict protocols. Physical demands are considerable, with high exertion, serious injury possible, exposure to all weather, mental stress, and lifestyle adjustment. You will receive intensive skill‑oriented training utilising Highway Patrol issued equipment and defensive tactics, advanced driving skills, firearm maintenance, defensive weapon proficiency, first aid and CPR training, and use of emergency equipment.

Position

Summary

Patrol / Enforcement – Promote general public safety and the protection of the citizens and travelers of Kansas through careful and safe actions and observations.

Reports/Communication/Investigation/Court – Initiates and completes detailed reports, legal documents, and other required paperwork. Prepares reports, investigative reports, and case information; communicates effectively; performs investigations and searches; testifies in courts; and responds to mandatory court calls.

Training – Completes annual training required to retain State law‑enforcement certification(s). Develops skills and knowledge required to perform duties, including firearms, defensive tactics, vehicle operation, equipment care, communication, first aid, inspections, enforcement, investigations, and acquisition of state and federal laws and policy compliance.
