Behind every police cruiser, fire truck, snowplow and more is a team of skilled fleet mechanics who keep it mission-ready. The City of Topeka relies on a diverse team of technicians who make sure the vehicles powering public safety and essential services stay safe, reliable and on the road.
The City's Fleet Services team is seeking a dedicated mechanic who takes pride in precision, problem-solving and public service to join its Equipment Maintenance shop. Mechanics here work on a wide variety of equipment - from small engines and pickups to heavy equipment and machinery such as loaders, motor graders, skid steers, vactor trucks and more.
Mechanics working in the Equipment Maintenance shop will receive training and assistance on company-paid time to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL), which is required by the conclusion of the six-month initial hire probationary period. Training, study time, and equipment are all provided by the City.
This position works Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Incumbents may be required to assist with after-hour snow and ice removal or other emergency work as needed, to include nights, weekends and holidays.
What you'll do:- Perform preventative and minor maintenance, inspection and repair on a variety of different gasoline motor and diesel engine vehicles.
- Assist in diagnostic evaluation and determination of vehicle malfunctions.
- Adjust, repair and replace brake, suspension, fuel, ignition, and exhaust systems.
- Maintain vehicle and equipment maintenance records and documentation.
- Conduct test-drives and maintain tools and equipment.
- Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Is reliable, punctual and committed to consistent attendance and high-quality work.
- Has knowledge of and interest in the service, maintenance and repair of a diverse fleet of vehicles and specialty equipment.
High school diploma or equivalent is required; vocational school applicable to the mechanics trade is preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license and must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka's insurance carrier.
Opening will be filled at one of three levels based on qualifications:
Mechanic I (K18):requires one (1) year verifiable, full time automotive, truck or heavy equipment maintenance work. Experience can be substituted with the completion of a vocational school program applicable to the mechanics trade.
Mechanic II (K20):Must posses a minimum of two (2) current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certificates and three (3) years verifiable full-time journeyman light automotive, light truck maintenance work.
Master Mechanic (K24):Must possess Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician certificate and three (3) years verifiable journeyman experience in diagnosis, repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines, trucks, heavy equipment, and automotive mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems.
Positions are available on first and second shift with potential for emergency response and call back overtime situations.
Entry Rate of Pay:$22.40 - $26.77 per hour depending on qualifications
