The Camp Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising all camp operations and youth programs including implementing, monitoring, and evaluating Camp activities that focus on Yakama Nation wellness, recreational activities, natural resources, conservation, outdoor experiences, and cultural teachings. Responsibilities include providing overall leadership, supervision, and guidance to the Camp Chaparral staff and coordinating programs that will host workshops and activities at Camp Chaparral during camp ensuring the children and staff are safe, secure, and have appropriate food, supplies, materials and that it is enjoyable for the children and also appropriate for the age and developmental levels.

Camp Chaparral staff training will often take place in mid‑July every year. The three (3) camp sessions are tentatively scheduled during the last two weeks of July and the first week of August. The Camp Director will be required to remain onsite, including overnight accommodation, throughout all scheduled camp sessions.

  • All time will be spent at camp during the duration of Camp Chaparral.
  • Be active and visible in the implementation of all camp activities.
  • Facilitate and ensure the planning, organizing, implementing, and monitoring continuity of the camp weekly and daily activities and schedules.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate camp counselors and volunteers.
  • Ensure the safety and well‑being of all campers and staff.
  • Develop age‑appropriate recreational, educational, and leadership activities.
  • Manage camp operations, supplies, and budget.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding camper needs and behavior.
  • Enforce camp policies, procedures, and emergency protocols and respond appropriately to emergencies and behavioral concerns.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, incident, and health records.
  • Organize staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Promote positive youth development and inclusion.
  • Coordinate special events, field trips, and outdoor activities.
  • Approve requisitions for activity supplies and materials for camp.
  • Monitor the financial budget and fund development operations to allow for adequate annual funding and to meet long‑term goals. Monitor budget for the camp operations, staffing, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Coordinate with the Bookkeepers to ensure all receipts for purchases are itemized and signed by the correct person responsible for the purchasing and/or picking up of the item(s) from vendors needed for Camp.
  • Develop and implement an inventory system for all supplies, i.e., materials, food, furniture, equipment, vehicles, and any item that is taken to camp and/or stored after camp.
  • Complete a physical inventory of all camp facilities including equipment items to be left at camp.
  • Facilitate the setup and maintenance of the generator to ensure that fuel deliveries are made timely and that the equipment operates properly. Communicate regularly with Facility Management for any needs of the generator.
  • Arrange communication system and potential needed assistance from Yakama Nation Police Department, Game Wardens, and Yakama Nation Wildlife Programs when there is possible endangerment to a child, staff, member of the general population or wild animals (i.e., bears and cougars).
  • Ensure that Camp Maintenance staff monitor garbage dumpsters, ensure garbage area is organized and establish rules and procedures for garbage dumping and collections so that wild animals (bears) will be discouraged from garbage site.
  • Ensure that Camp maintenance staff monitor the water system to ensure that Camp Chaparral will have sage, potable water throughout its water system where needed. Communicate with the Bookkeepers and Facility Management to arrange for any needed repairs to water system through the camp.
  • Ensure that Yakama Nation Tribal Maintenance Water and Sewer test water regularly throughout the duration of camp.
