Hourly Wage: $30.07/Regular/Full-Time

Incumbent is a sworn commissioned officer subject to a 24‑hour on‑call status. Incumbent is primarily responsible for the protection and conservation of fish, wildlife, and natural resources within the jurisdiction of the Yakama Nation. Incumbent enforces a variety of laws, regulations and ordinances relative to public safety, emergency management, natural resources, traffic, and criminal/civil matters. Work involves an element of personal danger during confrontations with violators and requires the exercise of independent judgment and discretion during emergencies.

Prepares reports, citations, statistical data, and logs. Appears in court; conducts investigations; makes arrests; patrols within the boundaries of the Yakama Reservation; off‑reservation sites; in‑lieu sites, and ceded areas.

Examples of Work Performed
  • Performs duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Public Safety organizational chart and established chain of command.
  • As assigned, patrols all areas within the exterior boundaries of the Yakama Reservation as directed, patrols the ceded area; responds to calls for services and crimes in progress.
  • Patrols areas by vehicle, foot, air, or boat, within jurisdiction of the Yakama Nation; coordinates patrol and investigations involving multiple officers or agencies.
  • Conducts search and rescue operations on both land and water.
  • Identifies, pursues, and arrests suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts; investigates complaints, disturbances, and violations; evaluates complaints and emergency requests to determine response requirements.
  • Initiates action required to secure the scene; administers emergency first aid as needed; conducts interviews of victims and witnesses; gathers evidence; arrests suspects; prepares incident and arrest reports.
  • As applicable, testifies in court proceedings relative to criminal, traffic, or administrative cases.
  • Prepares and submits required reports, documents, daily and biweekly logs, incident reports and vehicle reports in a timely manner.
  • Monitors treaty fishing and hunting activity relative to the Yakama Nation regulations.
  • As required or scheduled, performs police officer duties.
  • Participates in search and rescue operations; operates all‑terrain vehicles, related equipment, and boats.
  • Builds and maintains community relations, including advice and support in areas such as crime prevention and personal safety.
  • Abides by Yakama Nation Rules and Regulations.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the Revised Yakama Code (RYC), and other laws or regulations.
  • Knowledge of the Yakama Reservation and treaty areas.
  • Knowledge and ability to use effective and appropriate law enforcement techniques to enforce laws and regulations; uses proactive patrol techniques to minimize criminal activity.
  • Knowledge, skill and proficiency in use of firearms; ability to meet firearms qualifications on a semi‑annual basis.
  • Knowledge, skill and proficiency in use of an emergency police vehicle; ability to meet qualifications of annual emergency vehicle operator's course.
  • Basic computer skills for report writing, CAD/MDT operations.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively recognizing danger elements.
  • Ability to enforce laws relative to criminal and traffic violations.
  • Ability to conduct on‑scene investigations, aid persons in trouble, and render public services as needed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to provide oral testimony in any tribal, federal or state court and administrative proceedings.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to participate in mandatory training and meetings.
  • Ability to develop skill in the care and use of law enforcement equipment (firearms, breathalyzer, radar, two‑way radio, etc.).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to cope with stressful situations, be firm, tactful, and respect individual rights.
  • Ability to work independently and productively with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to practice and maintain reliability, dependability, and trustworthiness.
