This position serves as dual roles with Probation Services:
1) Project Coordinator for grant related activities and reporting, and
2) provides ongoing Probation Officer supervision as outlined in the grant proposal.

The Coordinator will have a high level of independence in their research activities but will work under the guidance of a Project Advisory Team. This is a specialized, grant-funded position that will assess the strengths and limitations of our RYC probation laws, standard operating procedures (SOP's) for probation, probation statistics, and court procedures for Yakama Nation Probation. The Coordinator will also explore various evidence-based probation models that are culturally appropriate, have graduated sanctions, and demonstrates higher rates of reduced recidivism.

Under the guidance and direction of the Project Advisory Team, the Coordinator will work on RYC Code Revisions for Probation, update probation SOPs, Probation court procedures, and monthly reporting that provides meaningful data on recidivism and client wellness. The Coordinator will work with the Supervisory Probation Officer to implement the updated RYC Codes, Probation Model, SOP's, court procedures, forms, statistical monthly reports, and etc.

In their Probation Officer capacity, the employee will: a) supervise, provide referrals, and support/encourage adult offender's to complete court ordered services and maintain compliance to promote sobriety, wellness, and reduce recidivism; b) engage and monitor clients progress and compliance with court orders and take appropriate actions; c) complete intake and ongoing assessments of clients to determine risks and strengths and properly/ethically report to the court in written form;

and d) coordinates service referrals and maintain working relationships with outside providers for treatment, community services, and etc.

Examples of Work Performed:

Conduct internal and external interviews of probation staff, clients, court staff, mental health/substance abuse program staff during the assessment period.

Review existing probation case files and forms and provide a report on the strengths and limitations of case management practices.

Perform research of probation models used in Indian Country that may be a good fit for the Yakama Nation based on interviews with probation clients, probation staff, court staff, and through ongoing consultation with the Project Advisory Team.

Drafts internal SOPs and standardized forms (including intake) that are in alignment with the probation model selected by Project Advisory Team which is supported by the research and findings during the assessment and research phases.

Provide an in-house training/workshops to go over the newly adopted probation model. The Coordinator will conduct training on how to apply the SOPs, forms, and timelines. This will ensure that there is a mutual understanding of roles, responsibilities, and inter-program coordination to ensure that cases are reviewed by the court in a timely manner.

Conducts pre-sentence investigations, using a screening assessment tool to determine risks of reoffending and to identify any relevant mental health, substance abuse risks, social issues.

Develops case plans for offenders and assists and supervises probation staff in developing their case plans which may include a referral for drug/alcohol, mental health, or domestic violence assessments. Referrals are based upon court orders and may also include community services.

Coordinates and communicates with family members, employers, schools, counseling agencies, and other community resources regarding the client's supervision, plans, and progress. Takes appropriate action for probation violations, including filing reports to the court.

Attends and participates in court proceedings, providing written and oral reports on clients' progress.
