Position Summary:
This individual will act as a collaborative, consultative advisor, working closely with partners and associates to deliver hands-on guidance across Canadian customs compliance. This role requires deep expertise in both legacy customs processes and the evolving CARM environment, with the ability to translate complex regulations into practical, business-focused solutions.
This position is primarily focused on import compliance and advisory, with exposure to broader trade matters as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide Canadian customs consulting and advisory services to importers, exporters, and Non-Resident Importers across all Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)-regulated matters
- Advise on tariff classification, valuation, origin, and tariff treatment in accordance with Canadian customs legislation
- Support clients with Canadian market entry strategies, including Non-Resident Importer (NRI) structures
- Assist clients through CBSA verification audits, including preparation, documentation, and response strategy
- Advise on and support voluntary disclosures and related risk mitigation strategies
- Act as a subject matter expert on CARM, supporting clients through implementation and ongoing compliance
- Apply expertise in both legacy (pre-CARM) and current regulatory frameworks to guide clients through transition
- Draft and implement customs compliance manuals, policies, and standard operating procedures
- Develop and deliver client training programs on Canadian customs compliance requirements
- Partner closely with firm leadership to deliver integrated, client-focused advisory solutions
- Act as a trusted advisor, translating complex regulatory requirements into clear, actionable business guidance
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience in Canadian customs and international trade compliance
- Deep knowledge of CBSA regulations and Canadian customs legislation
- Proven hands-on experience with CARM and familiarity with legacy customs processes
- Strong background in a consultative, client-facing environment (law firm, consulting firm, or in-house)
- Expertise in tariff classification, valuation, origin, and trade compliance program development
- Experience supporting CBSA audits, disclosures, and regulatory interactions
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify complex regulatory concepts
