Position Overview

The Globe and Mail is seeking an editor to join our newsroom’s editing team on a one-year contract. The editing team ensures The Globe’s journalism is accurate, clear and enjoyable to read.

The ideal candidate is an avid news consumer who loves the thrill of a breaking story and working under deadline. You should be comfortable tackling any subject matter with curiosity and critical thinking, always with the reader top of mind. You pay attention to detail but also see big picture how to improve a story, while knowing how to write snappy headlines and make every sentence count.

This role works collaboratively across the newsroom, with everyone from reporters to visual editors, handling stories in a variety of formats. Clear communication skills and the ability to provide and incorporate constructive feedback is a must. So is creative problem-solving. This position is based in the Toronto newsroom and requires a minimum of two days a week in office.

Responsibilities
  • Substantive edits on news, business and feature stories and columns on deadline.
  • Work through story edits with reporters and editors.
  • Write web headlines and display copy with an understanding of what resonates with readers online.
  • Ability to work evening and weekend shifts.
Qualifications
  • At least three years working in a daily newsroom.
  • Strong news judgment.
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Business journalism experience is an asset.
  • Experience making substantive edits on stories.

SALARY: This position is classified as a Content Editor in Group C of the Editorial Collective Agreement.
