Executive Producer, Live & Daily News, Weekends, English Services (On‑site)
LocationToronto – On‑site (Broadcast Centre 205 Wellington St. W., Toronto, Ontario, M5V 3G7)
Work ScheduleFull time, four‑day compressed work week
Key Responsibilities- Drive editorial decisions to prioritize stories, develop innovative content strategies, and guide teams through live, breaking, and ongoing news.
- Respond to and coordinate coverage of major events and breaking news, often partnering with CBC colleagues or freelancers at local, national, and international levels.
- Oversee the writing, researching, gathering, editing, vetting, and distribution of content in line with CBC News editorial strategy.
- Provide daily direction to teams regarding expectations for story coverage, including length, deadlines, updates, treatments, and added value.
- Monitor content across CBC News platforms to ensure breadth of coverage, variety of treatments, and overall quality.
- Plan, select, and secure financial and production/resource requirements for daily news coverage; exercise budget authority during production and post‑production.
- Ensure teams meet audience needs and have the tools to support their work.
- Maintain compliance with CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, including editorial sign‑off on sensitive or complex stories.
- Co‑ordinate, problem‑solve, and execute strategy with the team.
- Interpret data and competitive analysis to develop editorial strategies that build trust in the CBC News brand and grow the audience.
- Answer Ombuds complaints and manage external and internal editorial issues in collaboration with the Managing Editor.
- Work with the Managing Editor on staffing and hiring decisions, staff development, training, performance management, feedback, schedules, and outreach.
- Experience leading in a deadline‑driven, live news environment with strong pacing, tone, and production judgment.
- Exceptional critical thinking, including problem solving, crisis management, and editorial judgment.
- Thoughtfulness around serving audiences and driving inclusive journalism.
- Demonstrated professional experience across streaming, digital, social, radio, and television platforms.
- Superior coaching and mentoring skills for both developing journalists and seasoned professionals.
- Highly skilled in audio, video, digital, and social content production and planning, or a proven aptitude to master these platforms.
- Ability to forge positive team relationships based on collaboration, transparency, respect, and inclusiveness.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience leading iterative projects and programming requiring adaptation and innovation.
- Minimum seven years of related leadership experience in a multiplatform newsroom or a comparable environment.
- Preferred: a university degree or college diploma in journalism, video production, or related fields.
