Reporter/Editor – Municipal Affairs, English Services (On‑site)
B.C. Radio‑Canada is seeking a Toronto city hall reporter and analyst with a deep understanding of municipal politics. The successful candidate will uncover news that matters to citizens, provide regular analysis to enhance key municipal stories, and hold elected officials accountable.
The role involves communicating the workings of Toronto city hall to diverse community audiences. You will break original stories, maintain a strong digital presence, and appear regularly on CBC television and radio programs.
Key Tasks- Write and package stories for digital platforms.
- Deliver regular analysis on top stories.
- Contribute original ideas daily.
- Produce original journalism related to urban affairs in Toronto.
- Provide expertise on municipal issues to programs as needed.
- Make recommendations to assist in planning station coverage.
- Write quick, accurate stories in breaking‑news situations.
- Prepare scripts and present for broadcast media.
- Edit audio to produce radio stories to deadline.
- Connect developments at city hall to audience needs in communities across the city.
- Remain up to date on changes at city hall.
- Meet regularly with contacts.
- A university degree in journalism or equivalent.
- A minimum of five years journalistic experience.
- A passion for and deep knowledge of municipal politics.
- Demonstrated analysis‑writing skills.
- Demonstrated solid news judgment.
- Deep knowledge of and connection to equity‑seeking communities across Toronto.
- Established contacts at Toronto city hall and a history of developing meaningful stories through them.
- Experience using investigative tools to uncover news.
- Ability to balance multiple priorities and respond to competing demands in a short span of time.
- Exceptional proven organizational skills.
- Ability to participate in a highly creative and collaborative team.
- Demonstrated ability to plan projects and recommend news treatments for multiple platforms.
- Experience delivering live debriefs on radio and television.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, overtime, and weekends as required.
