Are you an ambitious self-starter and collaborative team player who is passionate about local storytelling and excels at breaking news? CBC Toronto is looking for an experienced reporter to help connect audiences to the news they need to know, the stories that affect their lives and the issues that resonate in their communities. A keen observer and critical thinker, you must be able to report on a broad range of issues and thrive in the fast-paced, high-pressure world of multiplatform news.

You will know how to gather, write, edit and package stories for a variety of platforms including digital, video, radio and social. You are a strong communicator who works well under pressure, is comfortable going live on air and can confidently break down a wide range of topics for the audience in a clear and concise way. You have established sources and always have a list of original story ideas on the go, reflecting your desire to go beyond the regular news agenda and the standard buzz on social media.

You will put audience needs at the centre of your journalism, ensuring your work highlights a broad range of perspectives, experiences and points of view, especially those from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. You will regularly find opportunities to meet new people and expand your network of contacts. You will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.

• Pitch, research, gather and produce original story ideas for all platforms that will engage and inform the audience, deepen our connections in the community, and elevate a range of voices.
• Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold.
• Deliver exclusive and original material on a regular basis.
• Distill large amounts of complex information under tight time constraints.
• Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of contacts and community members and participate in community engagement initiatives.
• Collaborate with colleagues across CBC to develop and break stories, plan and produce features, and coordinate long-term coverage.

• Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily news environment.
• Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original stories that meet the needs of our audiences.
• Superior writing skills across platforms, including digital text, and experience in gathering, editing and packaging content for digital, video and audio.
• Ability to present stories live on-air, from within the studio and out in the field.
• Knowledge of emerging storytelling formats and willingness to embrace change and new tasks across all CBC platforms.
• An unwavering focus on serving the needs of the audience and a passion for local news.
• A strong proven connection to the communities in the city of Toronto, and a deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
• A proven work ethic, strong communication skills and a positive, team-first attitude.
• Knowledge of other languages would be considered an asset.
