The Senior Accountant is responsible for ensuring the integrity and accuracy of financial reporting in accordance with GAAP/ASPE and the Law Society of Ontario. This role prepares and reviews financial statements and analysis, supports trust accounting compliance, maintains internal controls, and provides analytical support on ad-hoc projects. The Senior Accountant exercises sound judgment related to confidentiality, disclosure, and the application of Firm policies and procedures.
PrincipalDuties & Responsibilities Day-to-Day Accounting
- Execute daily accounting activities, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of all financial records
- Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations to maintain compliance and integrity
- Review monthly sales tax returns
- Manage the chart of accounts, including creating, updating, and deactivating general ledger accounts and profit centres
- Oversee vendor master data maintenance, ensuring accurate creation, updates, and deactivation of vendor accounts
- Prepare and review financial statements and related variance analysis
- Assist with annual budgeting process
- Support trust accounting compliance by reviewing and approving trust wires and transfers in accordance with Law Society of Ontario requirements
- Prepare and review audit documentation and schedules, ensuring readiness for external audits and regulatory compliance
- Identify and implement opportunities to streamline workflows, enhance efficiency, and strengthen internal controls
- Develop and maintain process documentation to ensure continuity and knowledge transfer after contract completion
- Prepare ad-hoc analysis for leadership (CFO, Managing Partner, Executive Director and Chair) as required
- A university degree in business/commerce/economics or MBA with an accounting major
- Professional accounting designation (CGA/CMA/CA) is strongly preferred
- 3+ years of relevant accounting experience
- Good understanding of ASPE
- Experience reviewing and overseeing accounting work
- Excellent communication, organization, and time management
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities
- Ability to work under pressure and adjust to changing priorities
- Ability to organize and analyze large volumes of data
- Advanced knowledge of Excel; working knowledge of Aderant and SQL preferred
- Team player with a positive, can-do attitude
