Role Overview
The Trust Investment Management & Oversight unit is a dynamic team within CIBC Private Wealth Management’s Wealth Solutions group, providing investment management services and oversight to clients of CIBC Trust Corporation. As the Director, Investment Management and Oversight, you’ll lead all Indigenous Trust investment oversight activities, ensuring that CIBC Trust fulfills its fiduciary duties for this significant client segment. You’ll work closely with Indigenous Trust Management and Administration, Indigenous Markets Relationship Managers, and other CIBC partners to address investment matters for both existing and prospective Indigenous Trust clients.
Your role will include conducting client due diligence, collaborating with key stakeholders to understand their needs, and ensuring investment policies align with governing trust documents. You’ll also oversee investment discussions, negotiate solutions, and play a key role in shaping the future of investment oversight for Indigenous Trusts at CIBC Trust. A critical part of your responsibilities will be leading thorough quarterly account reviews and ensuring ongoing compliance with each client’s Investment Policy Statement, reinforcing prudent oversight and best practices.
- Lead all Indigenous Trust investment oversight activities, ensuring fiduciary duties are met.
- Conduct client due diligence and collaborate with stakeholders to understand needs.
- Ensure investment policies align with governing trust documents.
- Oversee investment discussions, negotiate solutions, and shape future oversight for Indigenous Trusts.
- Lead comprehensive quarterly account reviews to monitor and evaluate portfolios against each client’s Investment Policy Statement.
- Proactively identify and address compliance issues, supporting CIBC Trust’s commitment to fiduciary excellence.
- Gather and compile investment information to monitor, manage, and report on client portfolios and related investment activities.
- Provide regular and ad hoc reporting in partnership with Trust and Relationship Management personnel.
- Advise and support team members on governance, reconciliation, and control of investment operations for Indigenous clients.
- Work with head office partners, including Risk, Legal, Governance and Controls, and Compliance, to ensure investment aspects of client engagements meet CIBC’s standards and regulatory requirements.
- Support sales and business development efforts by lending investment expertise to client pitches as needed.
- Stay informed and share expertise: remain up to date on market activities, investment trends, and Indigenous issues.
- Build and manage relationships: establish and nurture relationships with internal partners, external clients, and a broad network of advisors and stakeholders.
- Develop and oversee investment policies: collaborate with stakeholders to create suitable investment policies and frameworks for client engagements.
- Lead quarterly account reviews and ensure compliance: conduct comprehensive reviews and proactively address compliance issues.
- Monitor and report on investment performance: gather information to monitor, manage, and report on client portfolios.
- Provide guidance and support: advise and support team members on governance, reconciliation, and control of investment operations.
- Collaborate across CIBC: work with functional partners to ensure investment aspects meet standards and regulatory requirements; support sales and business development.
- Degree in Business, Commerce, Finance, or Economics.
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
- Additional advanced financial or investment credentials are an asset.
- 10+ years of investment management experience, with deep understanding of markets, the economy, and trust structures.
- Experience engaging with a range of stakeholders, from community members to C‑suite executives.
- Knowledge of trust law, compliance, regulatory, trading, and investment operations.
- Independent, objective, results‑oriented, with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
