SBI Canada Bank ("SBIC") is a Schedule II bank and is the subsidiary of India's largest bank, State Bank of India. The Bank is a full-service Canadian bank operating since 1982, providing Commercial & Corporate Banking ("CCB") and retail banking services. In the CCB segment the Bank has grown its book by participating in syndicated loans of mid-market to large corporations as well as providing bilateral financing in the Commercial Real Estate ("CRE") segment.

SBIC has a measured growth approach with primary focus on building its corporate loan portfolio, and to identify and develop complimentary business segments whereby the Bank can uniquely position itself to enhance fee generating business.

Job Title - Manager/Senior Manager, Business Development (Commercial & Corporate Banking)

Role summary:
You will be a key player in business development efforts with a focus on originating new corporate syndicated loans, commercial real estate and such other products that the Bank may introduce in the future. You will be involved in planning and executing client acquisition strategies, leading client pitch meetings, prospecting, and generating business from new domestic clients including multi-nationals, CRE Sponsors, PE firms, and aggregators.

In doing so you will actively interact with market participants such as high-street banks and PE firms, aggregators as well as directly calling on companies, as well as creating your own circle of influences as necessary. You will work closely with the credit adjudication team to conduct credit due diligence and present loan proposals to the credit committee for approval.

You will be reporting to the Head of Commercial and Corporate Banking ("HCCB").

In this role you will be actively contributing to the growth and direction of the organization in the mainstream Canadian corporate lending space, wherein you will be responsible for generating a significant portion of the Bank’s Canadian loan business. It is expected of you to discover new business opportunities within the risk appetite framework of the Bank.

Location:

Downtown Toronto (Financial District); on site attendance 5 days per week

Business Development and Relationship Management
  • Engagement with market participants (banks, individuals, companies, influencers, brokers, etc.) for business development, and to achieve the budgeted growth in corporate and commercial loans.
  • Identify new business opportunities by continuously monitoring all readily available sources of market intelligence and insight regarding existing customers to proactively identify new business opportunities.
  • In consultation with senior stakeholders, review the key elements involved with the transaction structure, the risk profile, and profitability to make a go/no-go decision.
  • Work with HCCB and the credit adjudication officers to ensure that the Bank’s lending processes and standards remain competitive and reflective of the Bank’s risk appetite.
  • Assist and guide the underwriting team members through the credit due diligence process with active involvement at every stage from origination through approval, to ensure timely completion to meet deal commitment timelines.
  • In conjunction with the adjudication team, present proposals to the appropriate authority for approval.
  • Responsible for achieving annual asset and revenue growth targets as agreed and assigned.
  • Assist the HCCB with new product launches, periodic senior management submissions, and other activities assigned from time to time.
Qualifications and skill set
  • Education:

    Graduate in the stream of Finance, preferably with an MBA. If you do not have a Finance degree, a CFA designation is highly desirable. Relevant experience in lieu of some of these qualifications will be considered.
