The Work

The Senior Commercial Mortgage Underwriter is part of a growing and dynamic commercial team. The role is responsible for underwriting construction and conventional commercial loans, adhering to established policies and underwriting standards, and meeting compliance and control requirements. The role also involves reporting, pipeline management, and networking with external business partners and internal staff within the Commercial department and other departments.

The position is located in Toronto.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze and underwrite commercial credit facilities for all mortgage product types, including construction and conventional loans ranging from 2.5 million to 50.0 million, while ensuring compliance with lending guidelines and submitting recommendations for approval to management.
  • Ensure all lending criteria are satisfied on deals underwritten and that documentation and conditions are met in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with external origination partners and internal contacts (funders, managers, administrators, and commercial mortgage sales staff) to ensure timely and efficient processing and to meet funding deadlines and deliver superior customer service.
  • Manage deal flow time effectively to meet prescribed deadlines.
  • Perform various administrative and reporting duties required for the department and company, contributing to senior management needs.
  • Demonstrate proficient underwriting skills (minimum 5 years of commercial mortgage experience) and a track record of service excellence.
  • Possess post-secondary education (diploma/degree) preferred, preferably in business or finance.
  • Maintain good working knowledge of MS Office (Word and Excel) and strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Apply sound business sense with technical knowledge of secured lending and factors affecting the commercial mortgage market.
  • Demonstrate organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities and strong time management.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and be comfortable attending industry events as required.
  • Make sound underwriting decisions as a self-starter, following corporate policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, including handling complex files with limited information when necessary.

The incumbent will be working hybrid; in-office time will be spent at the EQ Bank office located at 2200-25 Ontario Street, Toronto, ON.
