Compensation: $80,000 – $95,000 annually, depending on experience

Job Summary

The Tax Manager is a senior leadership role responsible for the full lifecycle of personal and corporate income tax engagements across a diverse and growing client portfolio. This individual will bring deep technical expertise in Canadian tax compliance, a strong high-volume T1 and T2 track record, and the professional drive to pursue or complete the CPA In-Depth Tax Program (CICA). The Tax Manager will serve as the primary CRA liaison, lead all client-facing tax communications, and play a key role in shaping the tax department’s processes, culture, and growth.

Hours

Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM. Hours are expected to increase significantly during personal and corporate tax season. This role is primarily in-office, based at our Toronto location, with flexibility as determined by management.

Job Responsibilities
  • Prepare and review personal (T1) and corporate (T2) income tax returns for a broad client base, including owner-managed businesses, managing high-volume filings with accuracy and full CRA compliance
  • Develop and execute tax planning strategies that minimize liability and support long-term financial objectives for owner-managed Canadian domestic clients
  • Lead and manage the tax department’s processes, procedures, and workflow during tax season, bringing structure, efficiency, and quality control to every filing cycle
  • Draft, review, and manage all CRA correspondence, including responses to assessments, audit inquiries, objections, and other administrative matters
  • Serve as the primary client-facing representative for all tax matters, explaining complex processes clearly, resolving issues with professionalism, and building long-term trusted client relationships
  • Prepare and review quarterly and year-end tax provisions, reconciliations, and tax installment schedules for both corporate and individual clients
  • Manage and track tax installment schedules for corporate and individual clients
  • Coordinate with the bookkeeping and accounting teams on the preparation of financial statements used as the foundation for tax filings
  • Identify technical tax issues, conduct legislative research, and implement practical planning solutions that keep clients ahead of regulatory change
  • Participate in the analysis of new tax legislation and recommend proactive planning strategies for clients
  • Coach, mentor, and develop junior tax staff, delegating assignments with intent, ensuring quality control, and building a high-performance team culture
  • Actively manage all engagement phases including budgeting, work-in-progress tracking, and file completion across the full client portfolio
  • Collaborate closely with PGI’s CFO and senior leadership on internal tax strategy, compliance priorities, and reporting
  • Assist in marketing the firm’s tax services and represent Progress Group at networking and business development events
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in personal and corporate tax preparation within a public accounting firm (required)
  • Demonstrated completion of a minimum of 500 T1 personal tax returns and 100 T2 corporate tax returns (required)
  • Currently enrolled in or aspiring to complete the CPA In-Depth Tax Program (CICA) — enrollment or active progress strongly preferred
  • Thorough understanding of Canadian personal and corporate tax legislation, CRA processes, and compliance requirements
  • Proven experience managing or liaising with the CRA on assessments, audits, and correspondence
  • Exceptional client communication skills, able to explain complex tax matters clearly and professionally to non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong ability to multitask and manage competing deadlines across a high-volume, fast-paced client portfolio
  • Detail-oriented with a high standard of accuracy and a diligent, proactive work ethic
  • Ability to take full ownership of engagements, solve complex problems, and implement practical solutions
