Position: INVESTMENTS COUNSEL

INVESTMENTS COUNSEL (Private Markets Transactions) (5-10+ years’ experience)

Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (“HOOPP”) is one of Canada’s largest defined benefit pension plans. It is dedicated to providing retirement security to more than 475,000 healthcare workers in Ontario and as of December 31, 2024 holds $123 billion in net assets. It is also an organization that has been recognized as a leader in sustainable and responsible investing and has recently been named one of the Greater Toronto’s Top Employers for the fifth year in a row.

With offices in downtown Toronto and London UK, our client’s environment is fast-paced, friendly and diverse.

HOOPP continues to grow, both in size and complexity of its operations and investments, and is therefore seeking an experienced private markets lawyer to join its legal department in Toronto. Reporting to the Senior Director & Associate General Counsel, Investments, the successful candidate will be primarily responsible for providing transactional and strategic legal support to the Investment Management, Investment Finance and Risk divisions, on a wide range of complex global private equity, private debt, infrastructure and other private investments, and will identify and manage investment legal risk based on HOOPP’s risk tolerance.

The successful candidate will be expected to independently manage complex global private market investment files and projects.

The ideal candidate will have 5 – 10+ years’ experience in M&A, fund investments, private equity, private debt, and/or infrastructure, gained at a leading law firm, asset manager, private equity company, or as in-house counsel, with at least 3 years of experience in private practice. Experience in working with Canadian pension plans is highly desirable. The individual must be highly motivated, pragmatic and self-confident with excellent communication skills, as this person will be independently engaging directly with senior internal partners, external counsel and stakeholders.

Strong business acumen, good judgment and the ability to take ownership of matters are required to succeed in this role.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced transactional lawyer to continue to develop their legal career and their business and management skills in a supportive, team-focused environment. To ensure its success, the organization is committed to hiring exceptional people who will contribute their energy and talents towards achieving these goals. HOOPP offers its employees membership in its world class defined benefit pension plan and fulsome extended benefits.

HOOPP also believes that equity, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to its success and help employees feel valued and empowered to be their authentic selves.
