Job Purpose

The Senior manager - Tax, Product & Planning - plays a key role in supporting Scotiatrust colleagues and Scotia wealth partners by providing tax support expertise, company management experience and enhancing the delivery of the total wealth offering.

Key Accountabilities

  • Providing support to Scotiatrust sales staff, trust officers and their teams, Scotiatrust tax compliance group, Aqueduct team, Client Solutions specialists, and other colleagues on issues related to tax and estate/ trust planning and philanthropy for complex clients
  • Representing Scotiatrust in discussions with third party professionals as it pertains to ongoing management of corporations, including review of planning strategies and providing guidance to partners
  • Reviewing, opining and/or explaining to colleagues, co-fiduciaries and beneficiaries tax planning strategies for implementation of postmortem tax planning for corporations owned and/or controlled by an estate, trust or power of attorney account, ensuring corporate tax planning aligns with the terms of the relevant governing documents and the powers conferred on Scotiatrust as a fiduciary
  • Partnering with trust officers to proactively provide oversight and direction for the ongoing management of continuing corporations owned by trusts and power of attorney accounts
  • Reviewing and collaborating with the Scotiatrust team to provide tax, estate and trust and philanthropic planning strategies support and direction related to the Scotiatrust product shelf
  • Acting as a subject matter expert for the Senior trust officers and trust officers on all tax matters as they pertain to the administration of an estate, trust or power of attorney account, including reviews of schemes of distribution.
  • Collaborating with the Tax Compliance team on complex tax matters and tax reporting issues as they pertain to income tax and information returns filed for Scotiatrust clients
  • Creating and/or reviewing content – collateral, articles, blog posts, etc. – including those created by Scotiatrust colleagues and other business lines
  • Developing, supporting and/or delivering presentations to both internal and external audiences in support of ongoing education for Scotiatrust staff, advisor awareness, client engagement, and new client acquisition where expertise on estate & trust topics is required
  • Participating in select client meetings to showcase and leverage their expertise with both prospective and existing high value clients.
  • Leveraging knowledge of risk management frameworks to critically identify potential risks and escalate as required.

Requirements:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills with the ability to adapt communication style based on audience, taking complex technical tax and legal concepts and communicating them in plain language as necessary.
  • Strong strategic competencies – thinking, relationships and influencing – that will support the ability to be innovative and evolve the Scotiatrust offering.
  • The incumbent must be well suited to working independently and within a team
  • The position requires a high degree of specialized knowledge and experience. The incumbent must be highly conversant on a variety of tax and estate planning topics, including:
      • Federal and provincial/ territorial income tax law pertaining to individuals, trusts and private corporations.
      • Taxation of Canadian Controlled Private Corporations (CCPCs) and their shareholders, and related planning issues such as business succession, corporate reorganizations, postmortem wind-up strategies, and other various corporate transactions
      • Tax issues related to individuals, estate and trusts, philanthropy and applicable planning
      • An awareness of tax strategies involving the use of life insurance for individuals and their private corporations
      • Uses and issues related to legal documents such as wills, power of attorneys, trust agreements, shareholder agreements, etc.
