Job Description

RBC Phillip Hager & North Investment Counsel is Canada’s leading and premier Investment Counselling firm with more than $80 billion in assets under management. In the role of Research Analyst, you will be part of the Investment Strategy team that sits within Head Office and is led by the Chief Investment Strategist. This team is responsible for the curation and due diligence of the firm’s product shelf, guidance with respect to asset allocation and portfolio construction, and risk management frameworks.

The team also provides educational resources, and portfolio analyses to nearly 200 Investment Counsellors working at PH&N across Canada. Your main contribution will be related to portfolio construction, and management of the firm’s investment platform. You will contribute to the overall portfolio strategy and team’s decisions on appropriate levels of risk, the investigation of various risk management tools and technologies, and for the evaluation of all existing and all new investment solutions (public, private markets) for RBC PH&N IC.

What will you do?
  • Support Chief Investment Strategist in the overall due diligence, monitoring and assessment of RBC PH&N’s curated shelf of multi-asset products
  • Research and evaluate pooled funds/SMAs/ETFs for potential addition from/deletion from our curated shelf
  • Assist in preparing qualitative and quantitative due diligence materials, performance commentaries, and portfolio analyses/reviews
  • Provide personalized and responsive service to RBC PH&N investment counsellors and their teams with respect to asset allocation, portfolio construction, security selection
  • Address portfolio management related queries to support scenario analyses for existing and prospective clients
  • Collaborate with teams across RBC GAM, third party providers, Global Manager Research, WMC Alternatives team, and internal bank partners in furtherance of a more effective toolkit of products and solutions and greater competitiveness for our Investment Counsellors
  • Contribute and support internal only communications, and client friendly content
  • Contributing member of our monthly Investment Committee meetings
  • Maintain a framework for implementing and communicating changes in RBC GAM strategic and tactical asset allocation shifts
  • Support and contribute to IC education/training initiatives
  • Maintain and update Alts-tracker tool if/when required
  • Harness AI capabilities to drive greater automation in team processes and enhance productivity; explore opportunities to use AI to drive a better investment experience for our Investment Counsellors and potentially better portfolio outcomes
  • Participate in PM update calls for RBC PH&N IC by asking questions, and communicating back to Investment Counsellors.
  • Collaboration with Senior Portfolio Engineer on oversight and monitoring of our Product Fulfillment Models
  • Ensure that material on internal Counsel Net is up to date and current

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have
  • Bachelor's Degree with a focus on a relevant field of study (e.g. Commerce, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering etc.)
  • More than five years of experience in an investment-related role, ideally related to portfolio construction, asset management, macro-research
  • CFA Charter holder (or currently working towards Level III)
  • Demonstrated interest in financial markets and intellectual curiosity
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) with the ability to distill complex ideas into clear, relevant and timely advice
  • Responsiveness to our stakeholders, with a keen attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize in a demanding and fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, Morningstar, Bloomberg
Nice-to-have
  • French communication skills (both written and oral)
  • Previous experience working with investment advisors/counsellors and/or portfolio managers
  • Previous experience in mutual fund/SMA/ETF due diligence
