Purpose

Leads and oversees the international taxation planning and consulting globally ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures. Under the leadership of the VP International Tax & Global Tax Planning, the Director and Head Taxation Planning and Consulting leads tax related consulting and planning initiatives for International Banking, Global Banking and Markets, Executive Offices and Treasury;

and tax related planning and implementation for Global Minimum Tax in Canada and globally. The principal purpose of this position is to lead and supervise the application of the Canadian Foreign Affiliate tax rules as well as provide oversight of the relevant foreign tax implications in respect of foreign or cross-border transactions, which include mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and commercial banking transactions by and between the Bank of Nova Scotia and/or its international subsidiaries, and to lead and supervise the management of the Global Minimum Tax rules as well as provide oversight of the impact analysis and implementation & tax planning strategy.

this role right for you? In this role you will:
  • Lead and drive a customer-focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Significantly participate in projects whose main focus is to manage the global effective tax rate.
  • Take a leading role in managing the application of the Canadian Foreign Affiliate tax rules within the Scotiabank group, which encompasses a detailed knowledge of the complex rules pertaining to FAPI, dividend distributions, Canadian tax liabilities possibly arising in foreign subsidiaries, structuring, reorganizations and financing of foreign affiliates.
  • Assist subsidiaries’ local staff with complying with foreign jurisdictions tax rules, and those as modified by tax treaties as appropriate. These will include cross-border transactions that arise between various foreign countries. Rates of withholding tax and specific “Limitation on Benefits” rules are relevant to this task.
  • Liaise with operational management and external advisors and provide tax information and/or advice with respect to various business opportunities and transactions as required.
  • Take a leading role in managing the Global Minimum Tax rules as they apply to Scotiabank in Canada and globally; prepare impact assessments and provide solutions to close the gap identified and provide tax technical supports and interpretations of OECD Pillar Two model rules and administrative guidance.
  • Identify tax planning opportunities and lead the implementation of tax planning strategies as they relate to Global Minimum Tax.
  • Collaborate with country finance team in the implementation of Qualified Domestic Minimum Tax rules, where applicable.
  • Manage team members by providing strong leadership to motivate individuals in order to achieve their objectives; exhibit an ability to listen, negotiate and communicate goals; share knowledge, experience and responsibility when dealing with staff; recognize training and development needs in relation to business objectives.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
