Position: Venue Manager (Conference Centre)

Position Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Banquet and Event Services, Venue Managers ensure events at The Globe and Mail Centre are executed professionally and safely, providing superb service to clients, vendors, and guests. This full‑time, salaried position is based in Toronto and may involve weekends, evenings, or night shifts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Opening and securing premises before and after the event, facilitating arrival and departure of staff, vendors, clients, and guests.
  • Running the venue according to the Event Agenda and all applicable regulations (health & safety, fire, liquor licenses, sound restrictions, etc.).
  • Ensuring clients, vendors, and caterers adhere to policies during set‑up, production, and tear‑down.
  • Communicating special arrangements requested by clients within protocols.
  • Monitoring client and attendee reactions to exceed expectations and handling complaints.
  • Managing security, stock, equipment, and facility rooms and reporting status.
  • Completing operational and service checklists with attention to detail.
  • Providing or supervising bartending services according to laws and protocols.
  • Assisting with event setup, tear‑down, and inspections.
  • Maintaining cleanliness, safety, and hygiene standards in kitchens, bars, washrooms, and during events.
  • Overseeing and reporting on contracted staff and vendors.
  • Coordinating deliveries and pick‑ups with loading dock and building security.
  • Ensuring proper waste disposal and adherence to waste policies.
  • Adhering to uniform requirements.
  • Working with Venue Supervisors and Management to ensure smooth shift transitions.
  • Submitting electronic event reports and reporting incidents.
  • Managing beverage supervision and bar staff.
  • Handling cash float, deposits, reconciliations, and unused drink tickets per cash bar policy.
  • Contacting the Manager on Duty during emergencies.
  • Representing the Globe and communicating its mission when requested.
  • Continuously striving to maintain elevated standards of service and environment.
  • Other duties as required.
Venue Manager Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a training plan for new Venue Supervisors.
  • Train new hires on their roles during events.
  • Provide feedback on Venue Supervisors’ performance and assist with annual evaluations.
  • Complete daily, weekly, and monthly operational tasks related to venue upkeep.
  • Place orders, receive deliveries, and input items into inventory software.
  • Manage back‑end of Point of Sale and inventory systems.
  • Assist with bar program and menu development.
  • Attend Distribution and Staffing Meetings with Sales and Events teams.
  • Support bar program tasks such as building cages, creating consumption sheets, printing menus, and managing storage and supplies.
  • Collaborate with Manager, Banquet and Event Services on venue maintenance.
  • Perform other operational and administrative duties as required.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years in events/hospitality with extensive client service experience, preferably in a dedicated venue.
  • Prior Event/Banquet Manager or Supervisor experience.
  • Strong leadership and training skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of event, alcohol service, catering, and hospitality procedures.
  • Problem‑solving ability under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, goal‑oriented environment with multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, POS and inventory software.
  • Physical capability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform hands‑on tasks.
  • Smart Serve certification required.
  • Food Handling Certification and knowledge of industry best practices is an asset.
  • CPR‑C First Aid certification is an asset.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
