Position: Senior Legal Counsel (*1 Year Contract*)

Reports to: SVP, Legal and Corporate Secretary
Position Summary: The Senior Legal Counsel has responsibility for assisting the Legal Department in matters relating to corporate, commercial, securities, and real estate transactions and compliance with applicable laws.
Responsibilities:
Provide legal advice to CAPREIT and its affiliatesAssist the SVP, Legal with the overall management of the legal function and legal affairs of CAPREIT and its affiliatesWork with the Investment Department and the Chief Investment Officer to negotiate, manage, and close real estate transactionsReview and draft contracts to support the operations and corporate services departmentsDraft and review continuous disclosure documents as required by applicable securities lawsAssist with managing litigation claimsWork with the Risk and Compliance Department to identify areas of risk and ensure reasonable risk management of business dealingsWork with corporate service departments to standardize contracts and letters of engagement and respond to queries on an ad hoc basisWork with operations teams to draft template notices, releases, and other standard documents and respond to queries on an ad hoc basisAdvise on enterprise-wide projectsAssist in preparing reports and memorandums to the Board of Trustees on legal mattersWork with external counsel as requiredOther duties as may be requiredSkills & Requirements:
Law degree from a recognized Canadian law schoolAt least 5 years experience post-call at a law firm with knowledge of corporate, commercial, securities and mergers and acquisitions. Exposure to real estate will be a strong asset.Must be able to identify issues, keep abreast of legislative changes and legal developments and maintain good connections with key external counsel and firmsHigh level of organizationExcellent attention to detailStrong written and verbal communication skillsQualifications:
Licensed lawyer, Ontario bar, with 5+ years of experience post-callStrong, adaptable and flexible team playerAbility to speak French is an assetCompensation & Work Arrangement:
Competitive Base Salary between $150,000 - $200,000.Hybrid Work Model:
Minimum 4 days a week in the office (Monday to Thursday).
