Position: Senior Manager, Sustainability (Term)

Overall Purpose

Reporting to the Executive Officer, Facilities & Planning, the Senior Manager, Sustainability provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the Toronto District School Board’s environmental sustainability mandate. The role advances system-wide sustainability strategies, performance measurement, policy development, and reporting, while embedding sustainability principles across facilities, capital projects, operations, and educational environments.

The position leads implementation of the Board’s sustainability vision, including environmental stewardship, climate action, and Eco Schools programming, ensuring alignment with the Capital Revitalization Strategy, Facilities Services priorities, and broader Board objectives.

Summary of Duties Strategic Leadership
  • Lead development and implementation of the Board’s sustainability strategy and energy management initiatives.
  • Translate Board priorities into operational sustainability programs with measurable outcomes.
  • Advise senior leadership on sustainability performance, risks, and regulatory requirements.
  • Establish sustainability priorities balancing environmental performance, operations, and fiscal responsibility.
Planning, Reporting & Programs
  • Lead sustainability performance monitoring, environmental data analysis, and reporting.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for senior management, trustees, and stakeholders.
  • Provide oversight of the Eco Schools program, including audits, certification, and staff learning.
  • Support student sustainability initiatives in collaboration with Teaching & Learning.
Partnerships & Integration
  • Lead stakeholder engagement, advisory committees, and external partnerships.
  • Represent the Board on sustainability forums.
  • Collaborate with Facilities Services, Capital Revitalization, Planning, and Toronto Lands Corporation to integrate sustainability into capital projects and operations.
  • Support sustainability initiatives in energy management, waste reduction, building operations, and school grounds.
  • Lead and support Sustainability Office staff, including recruitment and performance management.
  • Manage departmental budgets, grants, and sustainability funding opportunities.
  • Track financial savings from energy reduction initiatives and utility incentives.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • University degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, Education, or a related discipline and eight years of progressively responsible experience leading sustainability, environmental, or climate-related initiatives in a large, complex public-sector or institutional environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing organization-wide sustainability strategies, performance frameworks, and reporting.
  • Proven experience working with senior leaders, elected officials, advisory committees, and diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Strong strategic planning, program leadership, and change-management skills.
  • Ability to translate environmental objectives into operational and capital-ready initiatives.
  • Proven financial and budget management experience.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Strong understanding of public-sector governance, environmental legislation, and sustainability best practices.
  • Proven ability in promoting equitable practices which value inclusiveness and diversity.
  • Proficiency with data, reporting tools, and digital systems supporting performance management.
Special Requirements
  • Provision of own vehicle for Board business.
  • Regular travel to Board sites across the City of Toronto.
